About The Position

Commissionaires BC is seeking an experienced security officer to join their team, working with the City of Kelowna. This role is crucial for maintaining the safety and security of City of Kelowna properties, facilities, and assets. Responsibilities include conducting patrols, monitoring security systems, securing buildings, enforcing bylaw compliance, and participating in mobile surveillance operations. The position also involves community outreach, responding to complaints and incidents, and gathering information for detailed reports to ensure a safe environment for employees, visitors, and the public. This role offers collaboration opportunities with RCMP and Bylaw Services, providing valuable experience for those pursuing law enforcement careers. The role requires educating individuals on applicable bylaws and promoting compliance through a professional and respectful approach.

Requirements

  • A valid BC Security License
  • AST certificate
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a security or customer service environment
  • Previous experience monitoring multiple CCTV cameras simultaneously
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven time-management and organizational skills
  • Must be physically capable of conducting extensive foot patrols (up to 22,000 steps per shift) and working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Comfortable working in high pressure situations using deescalation training and tactics

Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular extensive foot and vehicle patrols of buildings, parks, and public spaces to deter, detect, and respond to security risks, unlawful activity, and safety concerns.
  • Enforce City bylaws (e.g., park hours, unauthorized structures, liquor restrictions) using a progressive, professional approach to ensure compliance.
  • Provide professional, courteous service while engaging with the public and clients in a respectful and empathetic manner. Offer assistance, guidance, and support, and address concerns related to unauthorized presence or behavior calmly and professionally.
  • Manage conflicts using effective de-escalation techniques, ensuring situations are resolved calmly and safely; document and report all incidents.
  • Issue and enforce trespass notices for repeat offenders in accordance with City policies.
  • Assist law enforcement (e.g., RCMP) through mobile surveillance activities related to active investigations and arrests.
  • Maintain accurate daily logs, reports, and notebooks documenting incidents, observations, and activities. Comfortable wearing and operating body worn camera in accordance with internal policies.
  • Monitor CCTV cameras and fire/alarm systems and reporting any suspicious activity.
  • Take incoming calls from the public, police and/or employees in a timely manner.
  • Work with the wider team and RCMP officers to dispatch support and resources to incidents/alarms as required.
  • Maintain a detailed log after the end of each shift.
  • Produce ad hoc reports as required by management/client.
  • Conduct follow-up reviews with clients to ensure client satisfaction.
