About The Position

Under the direction of an Occupational Therapist, Rehabilitation Engineer, or other primary healthcare provider, the seating and mobility technician is responsible for modifications of components on a seating and mobility system which are either pre-manufactured, modified or custom fabricated onsite by the seating technician. The seating and mobility technician performs fabrication, adjustment and repairs of seating and mobility devices to meet the patient's unique requirements. The position applies custom approaches to achieve the desired results for comfort, safety, and functionality, resulting in improved body functioning, better independence, reduction of current or risk of pressure injuries and improved quality of life. Custom seating enhances the seating and mobility systems client by creating solutions and adaptations that are beyond the limitations of unmodified commercial equipment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • One year post-secondary education or relevant specialized training required (an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered)
  • One year experience in seating and mobility systems required
  • Proficiency in carpentry, sewing and mechanics required
  • Demonstrated, in depth knowledge of various types of seating systems - Tilt, power, manual etc.
  • Familiarity with safety standards for working with and maintaining machinery, PPE and handling of materials (WHIMIS)
  • Ability to problem solve, visualize, fabricate and install devices using creativity and drawing on previous experience
  • Basic understanding and operation of machinery and power tools used in assistive technology
  • Basic understanding of design and fabrication principles
  • Basic understanding of human anatomy
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of this position, including lifting and standing

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in custom cutting and upholstery preferred
  • RESNA Certification preferred
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
