The Scribe supports physician team efficiency and productivity by working closely with physicians and/or physician assistants or nurse practitioners. The role performs administrative work such as electronic medical record documentation, chart preparation, schedule coordination, and identifying process-improvement practices. It requires anticipating physician needs and exercising discretion, tact, and modesty to avoid distracting medical staff from patient care. Good judgment, organizational ability, initiative, attention to detail, and self-motivation are important to success. The Scribe accurately and thoroughly documents medical visits and procedures as they occur, including patient histories and physical examinations; procedures and treatments performed by healthcare professionals; patient education and explanations of risks and benefits; and physician-dictated diagnoses, prescriptions, and care and follow-up instructions. The role also prepares referral letters, ensures records comply with legal, ethical, and practice standards, coordinates schedules across departments to balance office and surgery time, and performs other administrative and clerical duties as assigned. Duties may include preparing, mailing, faxing, or scanning confidential patient-care documents and related reports or tests; researching information for referring physicians and referrals; preparing operative reports; and making phone calls.
