Core Job Responsibilities Oversees research employees, students, and other relevant staff. Authors scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent applications. Assists in the development of training materials for research staff. Plans experiments and records and analyzes findings. Prepares research proposals and funding applications. Ensures that all activities are in compliance with applicable quality and regulatory standards. Mains current knowledge of relevant scientific and technical developments. Presents ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets. Department Specific Functions The Scientist, SOM (A) carries out an independent and collaborative research agenda focused on translational research across all Site Disease Groups. The position supports the collection, analysis, annotation, and characterization of biospecimens, including those obtained through operating room-based workflows, and works closely with clinical pathologists, surgeons, and multidisciplinary research teams. The role contributes to scientific discovery through publications, grant-supported research, biospecimen-based studies, and the development of innovative approaches that advance the University’s research mission and leadership in precision medicine. Conducts independent and collaborative research focused on all Site Disease Groups. Performs detailed annotation, curation, and quality control of pathology specimens and associated clinical, histologic, and molecular data. Conducts pathology analyses on fresh tissue specimens, including specimens collected directly in the operating room (OR), and supports tissue procurement, and processing workflows. Collaborates closely with clinical pathologists, surgeons, the Brain Tumor Institute, and multidisciplinary research teams to support translational research initiatives and biospecimen-based studies. Contributes to the development, maintenance, and utilization of disease-focused tissue banks, registries, databases, and biospecimen repositories in compliance with IRB, HIPAA, and institutional policies. Ensures aliquots of tissue and blood specimens are contributed to the Biorepository Shared Service Resource (BSSR) for centralized storage, annotation, and future research use in coordination with institutional stakeholders. Analyzes experimental and clinicopathologic data, interprets findings within the context of disease biology, and prepares figures, tables, reports, and summaries for scientific dissemination. Authors and co-authors manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, and other scholarly works for submission to peer-reviewed journals and scientific meetings. Assists in the preparation of extramural grant applications (e.g., NIH, foundation, and industry-sponsored awards), including development of specific aims, research strategies, methodologies, and supporting documentation. Supports the integration of emerging technologies, including digital pathology, image analysis, artificial intelligence/machine learning tools, spatial biology, and molecular profiling approaches, into research workflows. Establishes and maintains effective partnerships with the Department of Pathology, clinical services, and research support programs to facilitate efficient tissue acquisition, annotation, and research operations. Ensures accurate documentation, data integrity, quality assurance, and reproducibility of all research activities in accordance with departmental, institutional, and regulatory standards. Mentors trainees, fellows, junior faculty, and research staff involved in pathology and translational research projects, as appropriate. Collaborates with clinical pathologists, surgeons, and research teams to support intraoperative tissue procurement, molecular characterization, and translational research workflows. Works with researchers and clinical partners to develop, implement, and optimize research methodologies, workflows, and end products. Contributes to the annotation, curation, and quality assurance of pathology specimens and associated clinical, histologic, and molecular data. Ensures aliquots of tissue and blood specimens are contributed to the Biorepository Shared Service Resource (BSSR) for centralized storage, annotation, and future research use, in coordination with relevant institutional stakeholders. Provides ready access to all experimental data for managing staff and maintains accurate, complete, and reproducible research records. Requests or acquires equipment and supplies for assigned projects. Uses the internet, surveys, legal documents, databases, and other available resources to collect and analyze information.
