Scientist II

Genentech•Daly City, CA
•$85,500 - $158,700•Onsite

About The Position

As a Scientist II on the Small Molecule Biomarkers (Metabolomics & Lipidomics) team in the Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics (DMPK) department at Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED), the role supports drug discovery by executing high-throughput mass spectrometry workflows and applying modern tools, including Generative AI, to generate biological insights. The position is based onsite in South San Francisco. The Scientist II performs LC-MS biomarker workflows, prepares samples using liquid-handling automation, and executes global and targeted metabolomics and lipidomics protocols across biological specimens. The role also processes and analyzes mass spectrometry data using in-house AI/ML workflows and commercial software, oversees bioanalytical quality control, maintains accurate experimental records, and supports routine laboratory operations and safety and quality compliance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in biological, chemical, pharmaceutical sciences, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of direct biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry experience with a Bachelor’s degree, or at least 3 years with a Master’s degree.
  • Experience executing LC-MS assays for endogenous small-molecule metabolites or lipids.
  • Experience with sample preparation techniques such as protein precipitation, liquid-liquid extraction, or solid-phase extraction.
  • Practical experience operating and troubleshooting modern LC-MS platforms, such as UHPLC, triple quadrupole, or high-resolution mass spectrometers.
  • Experience using analytical data-processing software.
  • A solid foundation in biochemistry and cellular metabolism.
  • Excellent communication skills and a track record of working effectively in multidisciplinary project teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience or strong aptitude using Generative AI tools for coding.

Responsibilities

  • Perform onsite lab-based LC-MS workflows to acquire high-quality mass spectrometry biomarker data supporting target biology evaluation, drug discovery, and development.
  • Use liquid-handling automation for sample preparation, including protein precipitation, liquid-liquid extraction, solid-phase extraction, and chemical derivatization.
  • Prepare and execute global and targeted metabolomics and lipidomics protocols across biofluids, tissues, and cells.
  • Process mass spectrometry data and perform statistical analyses using in-house AI/ML workflows and commercial software tools.
  • Oversee bioanalytical quality control using common industry practices and critical analytical reasoning.
  • Organize and document accurate experimental records, following lead scientists’ guidance, to support timely delivery of high-quality data and study reports.
  • Support routine laboratory operations, including instrument maintenance and consumable and chemical management.
  • Follow laboratory safety and quality standards.

Benefits
