About The Position

The Special Technologies Laboratory (STL) is seeking a Data Scientist to work across multiple teams at its Santa Barbara, California facility. The role supports the design and development of novel algorithms for signal and data processing as part of an interdisciplinary team with diverse subject backgrounds. The work focuses on analyzing multimodal data from critical infrastructure monitoring, detecting anomalous behavior and emerging risks, and applying analytical methods to quality assurance, system integrity, and counter-sabotage objectives. The primary work location is the Special Technologies Laboratory in Santa Barbara, California. A flexible schedule may be negotiated with the manager, with options to work 5/8, 9/80, or 4/10 work weeks. The position requires a pre-placement physical examination, including a drug screen, and a valid driver’s license. The role requires eligibility to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship and is subject to federal background investigation and other clearance requirements. The annual salary range is $83,075.20–$124,612.80. Starting salary depends on position market value, the candidate’s education and experience, and internal equity.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a calculus-based STEM field and at least 2 years of relevant experience; graduate research experience may be recognized.
  • Skill-building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge.
  • Proficiency with common compiled and interpreted scripting languages such as C, C++, or Python.
  • Experience developing statistical concepts to create solutions to physical science problems.
  • Experience building machine learning models for multimodal datasets.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance; this requires U.S. citizenship and being at least 18 years of age.
  • Must undergo required pre-employment drug testing and background review; selected applicants are subject to a federal background investigation and subsequent reinvestigations.

Nice To Haves

  • Course of study in applied mathematics, electrical engineering, software engineering, or computer engineering is preferred.
  • A graduate degree in a STEM field is preferred, with either a graduate or undergraduate degree in a calculus-based physical science, engineering, or applied mathematics field.
  • Proficiency with signal processing, data exploration, and statistical analysis techniques is highly desired.
  • Interest in machine learning methods, including clustering, regression, and classification, is preferred.
  • Experience with data visualization tools and user interfaces is preferred.
  • Experience developing models of physical phenomena to correlate with measured data is preferred.
  • Interest in autonomous manufacturing and inspection.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate machine learning algorithms to analyze multimodal data, including time series, imagery, and sensor streams, from critical infrastructure monitoring.
  • Design models to detect anomalous behavior and emerging risks in complex processes.
  • Apply statistical and data-driven techniques to support quality assurance, system integrity, and counter-sabotage objectives.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate operational challenges into analytical solutions.
  • Perform exploratory data analysis to understand data characteristics, limitations, and quality.
  • Communicate technical findings clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Contribute to documentation, testing, and continuous improvement of analytical workflows.
  • Perform other duties assigned by Management.
