Scientist II

AbbVie•Worcester, MA
•$84,500 - $162,000

About The Position

AbbVie is seeking a Scientist II to develop downstream purification processes for pipeline molecules and support chemistry, manufacturing, and controls (CMC) activities. The role covers early- and late-stage programs, commercial process development, process characterization, and technology transfer. It also contributes to continuous improvement and next-generation platform development, including assessment of cost of goods, process fit, and process-intensification gains. The Scientist II independently plans and performs laboratory experiments, applies experimentation and modeling to optimize purification operations, and builds deep scientific understanding of platform processes and their effects on manufacturability. The role collaborates across scientific disciplines and project teams and is expected to advance innovative technologies such as AI, automation, and digital transformation. The scientist may author publications, presentations, and regulatory documents or serve as a primary inventor of patents, while following corporate requirements for conduct, safety, material handling, controlled substances, and GxP compliance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in biological science, with a focus in immunology, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, or a related discipline.
  • Typically 7 or more years of relevant laboratory experience with a bachelor's degree, or 5 or more years with a master's degree.
  • Thorough theoretical and practical understanding of the relevant scientific discipline.
  • Excellent oral and written technical communication skills.
  • Ability to present research outcomes to multifunctional teams.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to overcome complex issues.
  • Success coordinating and executing important projects to achieve business goals.
  • Results-oriented work ethic, positive can-do attitude, sense of urgency, and self-motivation.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and maintain strong relationships with internal, global, and external collaborators.

Nice To Haves

  • Education in chemical engineering, biochemistry, biochemical engineering, or biotechnology.
  • Experience in downstream process intensification or modeling.
  • Experience in purification process development; strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop robust downstream processes for early- and late-stage pipeline molecules to support CMC activities and improve technology-transfer workflows.
  • Drive commercial purification process development within project timelines.
  • Lead continuous-improvement initiatives and next-generation platform development, including identification and modeling of cost of goods, process fit, and process-intensification gains.
  • Optimize downstream purification unit operations through experimentation and modeling, and identify ways to accelerate process characterization.
  • Design and execute process-development and characterization activities, performing laboratory experimentation independently and productively.
  • Develop deep scientific understanding of downstream unit operations and platform processes, including their impact on manufacturability.
  • Advance innovative technologies in relevant areas, including AI, automation, and digital transformation.
  • Demonstrate scientific initiative and creativity in research and development; author publications, presentations, or regulatory documents, and/or serve as a primary inventor of patents.
  • Follow corporate standards for conduct, safety, handling of materials and controlled substances, and GxP compliance.
  • Communicate research outcomes to multifunctional teams and collaborate with internal, global, and external partners.
