About The Position

The Special Technologies Laboratory (STL) is seeking a Data Scientist to work across multiple teams at its Santa Barbara, California facility. The position supports the design and development of novel algorithms for signal and data processing as part of an interdisciplinary team with diverse subject-matter backgrounds. The primary work location is STL in Santa Barbara. A flexible work schedule may be negotiated with the manager, with options for 5/8, 9/80, or 4/10 workweeks. The role involves developing and applying analytical methods to multimodal data from critical infrastructure monitoring, including time series, imagery, and sensor streams. The successful candidate will help detect anomalous behavior and emerging risks, support quality assurance and system integrity, and contribute to counter-sabotage objectives. A pre-placement physical examination, including a drug screen, is required. The position is subject to drug testing and background investigations. Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship and being at least 18 years of age; a counterintelligence evaluation, potentially including a polygraph, may also be required. The annual salary range is $83,075.20–$124,612.80. Starting salary depends on market value, the candidate’s education and experience, and internal equity.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a calculus-based STEM field and at least 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Skill-building experience demonstrating either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge; graduate research experience may be recognized.
  • Proficiency with common compiled and interpreted scripting languages such as C, C++, or Python.
  • Experience developing statistical concepts to create solutions to physical science problems.
  • Experience building machine learning models for multimodal datasets.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance; this requires U.S. citizenship and being at least 18 years of age.
  • Must complete the required drug testing and background investigations and meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter.

Nice To Haves

  • Course of study in applied mathematics, electrical engineering, software engineering, or computer engineering.
  • Graduate degree in a STEM field, with either a graduate or undergraduate degree in a calculus-based physical science, engineering, or applied mathematics field.
  • Interest in autonomous manufacturing and inspection.
  • Proficiency with signal processing, data exploration, and statistical analysis techniques.
  • Interest in machine learning methods, including clustering, regression, and classification.
  • Experience with data visualization tools and user interfaces.
  • Experience developing models of physical phenomena to correlate with measured data.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate machine learning algorithms to analyze multimodal data, including time series, imagery, and sensor streams, from critical infrastructure monitoring.
  • Design models to detect anomalous behavior and emerging risks in complex processes.
  • Apply statistical and data-driven techniques to support quality assurance, system integrity, and counter-sabotage objectives.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate operational challenges into analytical solutions.
  • Perform exploratory data analysis to understand data characteristics, limitations, and quality.
  • Communicate technical findings clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Contribute to documentation, testing, and continuous improvement of analytical workflows.
  • Perform other duties assigned by Management.
