Scientist 3 – Translational Medicine, Oncology

Roche•South San Francisco, CA
•$120,700 - $224,100

About The Position

The Translational Medicine organization at Genentech aims to transform patient care through innovative and rigorous translational science that supports new medicines, accelerates drug development, and discovers new therapeutic strategies. The Scientist 3 will lead hands-on, laboratory-based translational research and discovery efforts in lung and gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, developing and executing experiments and assays to address biological, therapeutic, and biomarker questions. The role collaborates across Genentech Research & Early Development, including Research Oncology, Computational Sciences, and Translational Genomics and Proteomics.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Cancer Biology, Cell Biology, Immunology, or a related discipline; candidates with a BA/BS and 6+ additional years of related experience, or an MS and 4+ additional years of related experience, will also be considered.
  • Deep understanding of cancer biology, cancer immunology, and mechanisms of action and resistance to immunotherapies and/or targeted therapies.
  • Ability to independently lead hands-on, laboratory-based research and develop, optimize, and apply fit-for-purpose experimental assays using relevant preclinical models and human samples.
  • Experience with multidisciplinary approaches such as primary immune and/or tumor cell isolation and culture, immune-cell functional and tumor-killing assays, target-engagement and pharmacodynamic biomarker assays, multiparameter flow cytometry, and 2D/3D tumor microenvironment models, including ex vivo and in vivo approaches where appropriate.
  • Rigorous and creative approach to experimental design and problem-solving; highly organized, detail-oriented, adaptable in a fast-paced collaborative environment; excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Understanding of lung and GI cancer disease biology, tumor–immune interactions, and key oncogenic signaling pathways.
  • Interest in and experience applying emerging translational technologies, such as single-cell and multi-omic profiling, spatial approaches, advanced functional assays, and other novel platforms.
  • Proficiency analyzing high-throughput data, such as multiomics, single-cell, and spatial transcriptomics datasets.

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute experiments to validate biological and therapeutic hypotheses derived from non-clinical, clinical, and real-world data.
  • Synthesize, analyze, and interpret experimental and computational data in collaboration with experts from other functions.
  • Elucidate mechanisms of action and therapeutic resistance to tumor microenvironment and tumor-targeted therapies to guide patient selection, pharmacodynamic biomarker assessment, combination treatment strategies, and next-generation target identification.
  • Identify, evaluate, and validate innovative cell-based, biochemical, and multi-omic assays, including single-cell and functional genomics technologies, to enable scalable hypothesis testing.
  • Establish internal and external collaborations to access emerging technologies, datasets, and analytical methods that support translational innovation.

Benefits

  • A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.
  • The position qualifies for the benefits detailed at the linked benefits information.
