About The Position

This position will serve as a School Facilities Architect in the Maryland State Department of Education’s(MSDE) Office of School Facilities and perform duties assigned to the Department by regulation. The professional architect will assist in the management of statewide K-12 school facilities programs, including review and approval of complex, multi-year, capital construction projects and facility programs in coordination with local jurisdictions, Maryland Department of General Services (MDGS), and the Interagency Commission on School Construction (IAC). The School Facilities Architect will also assist with research, development, and publication of guidelines for the planning and design of school facilities. They will provide technical assistance on school planning, design, construction, and maintenance issues for local education agency staff, government officials, professional consultants, local board of education members and staff, members of special taskforces, and the public. On behalf of State Superintended of Schools, State Board of Education, and the Governor, they will address school facility concerns raised by the members of the public and school communities.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Architecture.
  • Five years of experience as a licensed professional architect in the design of major institutional buildings are required.
  • Possession of a current license as a professional architect in Maryland or a state with comparable requirements is required.
  • Applicants must consent to State and FBI (CJIS) background check as a routine procedure for all employees.
  • Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.

Responsibilities
