About The Position

The School to Registered Apprenticeship Program (STRAP 1) is an opportunity for high school juniors and seniors to gain practical experience while continuing their education. This program is designed to provide students with hands-on training and mentorship within a qualified Career and Technical Education framework. Participants will work alongside experienced professionals, learning valuable skills applicable to future careers. The program requires a commitment to both academic success and workplace performance, with specific schedules for both the school year and summer breaks. Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in Junior or Senior year of high school
  • 16 or 17 years old
  • Enrolled in a qualified Career and Technical Education class
  • Maintain passing grades and avoid excessive absenteeism
  • Provide grades and attendance documentation upon request
  • Obtain approval of parents through a signed agreement
  • Have reliable transportation to/from work
  • Ability to pass a drug and alcohol test
  • Ability to pass a post-offer pre-employment physical
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Mechanically inclined
  • Knowledge of basic hand tools (metric and standard)
  • Ability to stay on task
  • Motivated to learn (asks questions, self-starter)
  • Follows instructions
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for shift
  • Ability to reach with hands and arms
  • Ability to stoop, squat, bend at the waist, and kneel
  • Ability to walk varying distances
  • Ability to climb stairs
  • Ability to lift above waist height (frequent depending on machine center)
  • Ability to lift over 50 lbs. (frequent depending on machine center)
  • Constant repetitive use of hands
  • Constant standing/walking
  • Occasional sitting
  • Correctable near and far vision; depth perception
  • Tolerance for all weather elements
  • Tolerance for loud conditions
  • Tolerance for airborne particles (sawdust)

  • Hearing preferred for awareness of surrounding machinery, mobile equipment, and emergencies

Responsibilities

  • Follow Safety / Lock Out Tag Out policies and procedures
  • Work after school and weekends during the school year (not to exceed 20 hours/week)
  • Work 30-40 hours per week, including weekends, during the summer schedule
  • Communicate with mentor/supervisor and teacher/counselor regarding any questions, problems, or issues that arise
