About The Position

The purpose of this class is to perform support and facilitate the educational process within the Natchitoches Parish Public School System by providing a safe and secure environment through building and establishing meaningful relationships with students and staff; and proactively interacting with the school community to ensure the enforcement of city and state laws, preservation of public order, protection of life and the prevention, detection, or investigation of crime. The School Resource Officer/Deputy (SRO) will work effectively with students, parents, school personnel, and community agencies to support teaching and learning in the schools. This class will patrol the school, school grounds, and areas adjacent to the school property to protect students, staff, and visitors from physical harm and prevent loss to school property resulting from criminal activity. The SRO works within a general outline of work to be performed, develops work methods and sequences under general supervision, and makes decisions based on defined parameters.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of experience in law enforcement.
  • Certification by the State of Louisiana Peace Officer Standards & Training Council as Law Enforcement Officer.
  • Within one (1) year in this position, obtain certification for DARE Instructor (2 week- 80-hour course).
  • Within two (2) years in this position, complete the Basic and Advanced Level School Resource Officer Training
  • At a minimum, all employees must be at least 21 years of age (upon the date of hire).
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalency.
  • Have no felony, drug, or domestic violence convictions.
  • Pass all required pre-employment screenings.
  • Possess a valid Louisiana driver’s license.
  • Be able to communicate both verbally and in writing as required.
  • Possess basic computer skills such as typing, writing reports, and sending and/or receiving emails as applicable to the position.

Responsibilities

  • Develops crime prevention programs and conducts security assessments to deter criminal or delinquent activities. Remains current on crime statistics in the area.
  • Provides security (when requested and approved by his/her supervisor or division commander) at school home and away events.
  • Trains schools’ staff and students on approved methods to help keep schools safe in the event of an emergency which includes Lock-Down, Active Shooter drills, and other security-related exercises.
  • Monitors entrances and exits of buildings, by walking school halls and checking for safety concerns during school hours.
  • Monitors traffic between classes and mass movement such as the cafeteria at lunchtime.
  • Documents all infractions.
  • Provides a visible security presence on campus and ensures he/she is accessible for school administration.
  • Assists school administration in reviewing court orders such as custody issues, restraining orders, etc.
  • Monitors all law enforcement dispatch service calls to be aware of incidents that may threaten school security.
  • Teaches the approved DARE curriculum to students of various grades as assigned.
  • Works from various locations as needed.
  • Attends overnight leadership camps sponsored by the NPSO Youth Services Division.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
