About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Community Services Sergeant, this position performs duties related to the safety of school aged children enroute to and from school within the City. This role involves directing and controlling children at designated crossings, preventing unsafe acts, and informing motorists about children using the crosswalk. The position requires interaction with the public, school staff, and students in a courteous and professional manner, while adhering to all safety regulations and reporting procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Maturity and sense of responsibility towards children who use school travel routes that fall within the assigned locations.
  • Working knowledge of the streets and landmarks in an assigned area of responsibility.
  • Working knowledge of basic procedures and work methods required to perform the full range of assigned duties.
  • Working knowledge of pertinent laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to the assigned are of responsibility.
  • Exceptional communication skills, paired with a strong customer service background, and effective interpersonal skills.
  • Collaboration skills to effectively work with others to achieve common goals through communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.
  • Ability to effectively provide simple oral instructions to children.
  • Ability to monitor traffic flows and identify natural breaks in traffic flow.
  • Ability to judge the speed of moving vehicles and to make decisions regarding the stopping for vehicles and its effect upon traffic control.
  • Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, including extreme hot and cold weather and during times of precipitation.
  • Ability to work with the public in a fair and consistent manner, maintaining objectivity and excluding personal bias while performing job duties.
  • Ability to make decisions according to applicable laws, regulations, established procedures, and the directives of the City Manager and City Council.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures, and report all unsafe activities or conditions to supervisor.
  • Ability to provide the City with regular and predictable work attendance.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Community Services Sergeant, School Staff, Students, City employees, and the general public.
  • Exhibit exceptional professionalism, tact, and decorum in all areas of work duties.

Responsibilities

  • Directs and controls children at designated crossings, crossing in groups, and utilizing traffic signals and gaps in traffic where no signal exists.
  • Prevents children from committing unsafe and unlawful acts.
  • Encourages patterns of safe behavior by children when crossing streets.
  • Informs motorists, through prescribed signals, that children are using the crosswalk and have the right to proceed.
  • Report motorists who violate guard’s directions within 24 hours.
  • Responds to and interacts with the general public, school children, employees, and/or others within and outside of the organization in a courteous, professional, and effective manner.
  • Follows all safety regulations, policies, and procedures; reports all unsafe conditions and acts to supervisor; reports all accidents to the supervisor immediately whenever possible; follows recognized safe work practices.
  • Performs other special projects and other job duties as assigned or required during regular and non-business hours.
