The School Crossing Guard helps students cross streets safely by holding a hand-held STOP sign until all children have crossed. The guard reports unsafe observations, incidents, and accidents involving students to school authorities; records and reports the license numbers of vehicles that disregard the guard while in the crosswalk; assists students who are lost, injured, or need help; and follows all guidelines and regulations governing student crossings. The role is paid at $13.73 per hour for four hours per day when school is in session, with bi-weekly pay. Crossing guards earn one sick day per month and receive four paid holidays. Candidates will participate in an in-person interview, background investigation, criminal-history check, and previous-employer checks. If hired, they must complete a physical examination, audiogram, and drug screen at the department’s expense, and receive training before beginning the position.
