About The Position

This is seasonal, part-time work performed while schools are in session. The School Crossing Guard uses safe gaps in traffic—and, when necessary, creates safe gaps—to help students cross streets safely. The position reports to a designated supervisor and works under limited supervision. The work is distinguished by its focus on school crossing guard tasks and lack of supervisory duties. Tasks are performed outdoors in varying climatic conditions and in and around heavy traffic.

Requirements

Some knowledge of traffic rules and regulations.
Ability to stand for periods of two to three hours or otherwise react rapidly to unexpected events while presenting an exemplary public image.
Ability to work with children and enlist their cooperation.
Successful completion of the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission’s approved 8-hour Traffic Control Procedures program within one year of appointment.
Successful completion of the Federal Department of Transportation’s 8-hour School Crossing Guard certification within one year of appointment.

Nice To Haves

High school graduation or an acceptable equivalency diploma is preferred.
Some experience with children and/or road safety, or an equivalent combination of training and experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Responsibilities

Place school sentinel signs in the roadway at designated points near school crossings and remove them before going off duty.
Control vehicular traffic at designated crossings to allow children to cross safely.
Monitor children using the crossing to ensure they follow traffic regulations.
Report children who fail to cooperate to the immediate supervisor.
Attend work on a continuous and regular basis.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
