About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the School Crossing Guard Program Coordinator, employees are responsible for the safe and orderly crossing of school-age children at assigned locations throughout the city. Work is performed independently while assigned to individual posts, in accordance with established rules, procedures, and safety guidelines. Although employees operate without direct on-site supervision, they remain under the overall direction of the Program Coordinator. Employees exercise sound judgment in carrying out assigned duties and receive guidance and assistance in unusual or non-routine situations. Work is reviewed through observation, reports, and inspection. Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
  • No training and experience prerequisites are required to obtain this position.
  • Must be certified by the State of Florida as a School Crossing Guard prior to working as a School Crossing Guard. Certification must be earned within two weeks of employment.
  • Must be certified as a Traffic Enforcement Officer prior to working in traffic control. Certification must be earned within two weeks of employment.
  • Ability to learn and apply laws and guidelines pertaining to pedestrian movement in accordance with Florida Department of Transportation School Crossing Guard Guidelines.
  • Ability to learn and apply basic pedestrian safety principles.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to react quickly, calmly, and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and interact tactfully and impartially with the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, school personnel, law enforcement officers, and the general public.
  • Ability to maintain required certifications and complete annual recertification requirements.
  • Observe children approaching crossings and monitor surrounding traffic conditions.
  • Observe traffic signals and pedestrian crossing signals.
  • Clearly communicate instructions in English.
  • Hear spoken communication and surrounding traffic sounds.
  • Monitor motorists’ awareness of crossing activity.
  • Grasp and hold a stop sign for extended periods as needed.
  • Walk into designated crossing areas for visibility and pedestrian safety purposes.
  • Stand for extended periods of time.
  • Step on and off curbs safely.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions without protective structure.
  • Distinguish traffic signal colors, including red, yellow, and green.
  • Ability to judge the speed and distance of oncoming traffic and determine safe crossing opportunities.
  • Operate pedestrian crossing buttons and related equipment manually.

Responsibilities

  • Provides assistance to children crossing streets and highways to and from schools.
  • Maintains order by directing children to proper crossing areas and encourages behavior conducive to safe travel.
  • Provides other assistance to children as needed.
  • Is attentive to situations and/or conditions that could be potentially hazardous to pedestrians and/or motorists, and reports these conditions to the appropriate agency.
  • Maintains equipment in a state of good appearance and repair.
  • Maintains a high visibility to the public in order to make them conscious of their driving conflict.
