About The Position

The School Age Coordinator will be responsible for providing a nurturing environment for children in the Killarney Beach YMCA Before & After School Program. This role involves actively engaging with children, ensuring their safety and well-being, implementing play-based learning, and maintaining positive communication with families, staff, and volunteers. The coordinator will also provide leadership to the center team, ensure the facility is well-maintained, and develop collaborative partnerships with families to support successful outcomes for children. This position operates within a licensed childcare environment and requires adherence to all relevant regulations and policies.

Requirements

  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • Current Standard/Intermediate First Aid and CPR (Level C) certification OR completion of certification within first 90 days of employment.
  • Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Up-to-date immunizations or equivalent in accordance with local public health and Child Care Early Years Act.
  • Availability requirements: Monday to Friday, 6:15-9:30am & 3:30-6:00pm plus admin hours to equal 30 hours per week.
  • Passion for working with children and providing quality play-based learning.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and relationship building skills with families, staff, and volunteers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, lift up to 20 kg (44 lbs.), and participate in physical activities.
  • Ability to work outdoors for at least 2 hours daily year-round, in all weather conditions.
  • Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE) status, or actively enrolled in an Early Childhood Education program, or Child & Youth Work/Care Diploma, or Rec & Leisure Diploma, or Bachelor of Education (registered with the Ontario College of Teachers).

Responsibilities

  • Provide personal care to children, including toileting/diaper changing, first aid, and administering medication, while monitoring dietary, allergies, and medical conditions.
  • Actively engage with children, ensuring their supervision and safety in group settings of up to 15 children independently.
  • Plan and implement play-based learning in accordance with YMCA Curriculum.
  • Ensure positive, professional communication with families, staff, and volunteers on an ongoing basis.
  • Provide an inclusive environment, supporting the needs of all children, including those with exceptional behaviours and additional needs.
  • Demonstrate appropriate behaviours in line with the YMCA's Mission, Vision, and Values.
  • Adhere to work schedule to ensure program stays within ratio and provide adequate notice to supervisor regarding unexpected scheduling changes.
  • Demonstrate flexibility with routines and schedules.
  • Maintain active and effective communication and information networks within the centre, the staff team, and with community agencies working with individual children and families.
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of regulations and operating standards, ensuring the centre operates in accordance with all directives, legislations, guidelines, and policies.
  • Mentor the centre team, providing strong leadership to implement a safe, accessible, quality, child-centered, early childhood program.
  • Lead and work with centre staff to maintain a well-organized, accessible, safe, and clean child care facility, including classrooms, playground, washrooms, cubicles, and equipment.
  • Develop positive relationships and collaborative partnerships with families, understanding their specific needs and planning for successful outcomes.
  • Provide quality care to all children in a licensed childcare environment.
  • Comply with the Child Care Early Years Act, YMCA policies, and the YMCA Child Protection Policy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
