Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Special Education PLUS six years of experience working with developmentally disabled children in an Educational capacity.
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in a supervisory capacity with at least two of those years in an Assistant/Vice Principal or Principal position.
  • New York State Permanent or Professional Teaching Certification is required.
  • New York State SAS, SDA, SBL, or SDL is required.
  • Exhibits sensitivity and respect for children with disabilities and their families at all times.
  • Knowledge of educational needs and programming for students who are cognitively delayed, are on the autism spectrum, multiply challenged, medically frail or in need of behavioral supports.
  • Must have knowledge of regulatory requirements of the New York State Education Department, New York State Department of Health, Office of the Medicaid Inspector General, the Office of Children and Family Services and the Office of People with Developmental Disabilities as it relates to the program.
  • Must have working knowledge of CPSE and CSE operations and regulations.
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead a group of individuals in working toward desired goals.

Responsibilities

  • Develop policies and administrative procedures, standards and guidelines consistent with laws, regulations and guidelines of various funding and regulatory bodies including the NYS Education Department, Office of the Medicaid Inspector General, Office of Children and Family Services as well as county driven requirements per county contracts. Assimilates overall agency policies that apply to the Education Program.
  • Direct the Assistant Principal(s) in ensuring continuity of educational programs and care of students served. Develops and maintains positive working relationships with other school and agency personnel as well as community agencies with the goal of providing high quality educational and therapeutic services to children with disabilities.
  • Participate with the Chief Operating Officer in forecasting and planning program services. Participate in and is responsible for activities surrounding the development of the program budget, in conjunction with the agency’s fiscal department, including determining financial and physical resources needed to implement services.
  • Monitors expenditures against projected budget and works with the fiscal office in the development of any needed revisions to the budget. Approves requests for purchases and expenditures.
  • Participates with colleagues and Human Resources in interviewing, hiring, counseling, disciplining and the termination of employees. In conjunction with Assistant Principal(s) determines placements for new hires
