About The Position

SMS Mill Services, LLC is a leader in the steel mill services industry prioritizing recycling and environmental/worker' safety and handling all operations with integrity. SMS Coatesville is seeking a highly skilled, results-driven and dependable Scale Operator Specialist. This role is responsible for accurately weighing inbound and outbound scrap loads, maintaining records, coordinating driver traffic, and ensuring smooth daily scale operations in a fast-paced industrial environment. In addition to scale duties, this position will serve as the administrative backup for purchase orders, supporting office operations when needed. The ideal candidate is organized, safety-minded, and comfortable working in both an office and industrial yard setting. SMS provides a comprehensive range of services for steel mill customers. We partner with our customers to design custom, cost-effective solutions, which focus on adding value and achieving goals for the operation and the environment. Our range of services includes, but is not limited scrap yard management, finished or semi-finished product services, melt shop services, logistics/transportation support, and slag processing.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Previous scale house, logistics, dispatch, manufacturing, recycling, or industrial office experience preferred
  • Prior purchase order or administrative experience preferred
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office, email, data entry systems)
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to multitask and stay organized in a fast-paced setting
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality required

Responsibilities

  • Weigh and process inbound/outbound trucks, trailers, and material loads using truck scale systems
  • Generate scale tickets, shipping paperwork, receipts, and related documentation
  • Verify load information for accuracy and compliance
  • Coordinate truck traffic and communicate with drivers, yard personnel, and operations staff
  • Maintain accurate daily records of weights, shipments, and receipts
  • Report discrepancies, safety concerns, or operational issues promptly
  • Serve as backup for purchase order entry and related administrative tasks
  • Assist with invoices, filing, data entry, and general office support
  • Maintain organized records and documentation
  • Support management with reports and operational paperwork as needed
  • Follow all company safety policies and PPE requirements
  • Work safely in a dusty, dirty, outdoor steel mill scrap environment with frequent truck traffic and heavy equipment activity
  • Help maintain a clean and professional scale house/office area
