About The Position

SMS Mill Services, LLC is a leader in the steel mill services industry prioritizing recycling and environmental/worker' safety and handling all operations with integrity. SMS Coatesville is seeking a highly skilled, results-driven and dependable Shift Foreman. This role is responsible for overseeing daily production activities, ensuring safe work practices, coordinating manpower, and driving productivity while maintaining quality standards. The ideal candidate is a proven leader who can supervise crews, solve problems quickly, and work alongside employees when needed in a fast-paced industrial setting. SMS provides a comprehensive range of services for steel mill customers. We partner with our customers to design custom, cost-effective solutions, which focus on adding value and achieving goals for the operation and the environment. Our range of services includes, but is not limited scrap yard management, finished or semi-finished product services, melt shop services, logistics/transportation support, and slag processing.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Previous supervisory or lead experience in industrial, steel mill, scrap, manufacturing, or construction environments preferred
  • Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills
  • Experience managing hourly workforces in a fast-paced setting
  • Ability to motivate teams and hold employees accountable
  • Basic computer skills for reports, scheduling, and communication – Excel is a must!
  • Dependable attendance and flexibility to work shifts, weekends, and overtime as needed

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and direct unionized hourly employees during assigned shift operations
  • Coordinate daily workflow, job assignments, and manpower coverage
  • Hold pre-shift meetings
  • Ensure production goals are met safely and efficiently
  • Monitor scrap handling, material movement, loading/unloading, and processing activities
  • Enforce company safety rules, PPE requirements, and operational procedures
  • Conduct shift start-up meetings and communicate priorities clearly
  • Train, coach, and develop employees on safe work practices and job performance
  • Address attendance, conduct, and performance issues in coordination with management
  • Complete production reports, shift logs, and operational paperwork
  • Communicate equipment issues, downtime, and maintenance needs promptly
  • Work closely with operations management, maintenance, scale house, and customer personnel
  • Step in and perform operational tasks when staffing or production needs require it
  • Promote a strong safety culture and lead by example
  • Maintain accountability, discipline, and professionalism on shift
  • Ensure housekeeping standards are maintained throughout work areas
  • Respond to operational issues quickly and make sound decisions under pressure
  • Follow all company safety policies and PPE requirements
  • Work safely in a dusty, dirty, outdoor steel mill scrap environment with frequent truck traffic and heavy equipment activity
