About The Position

SMS Mill Services, LLC is a leader in the steel mill services industry prioritizing recycling and environmental/worker' safety and handling all operations with integrity. SMS Coatesville is seeking a highly skilled, SAFETY FOCUSED and dependable Heavy Equipment Operator. This role is responsible for is responsible for operating heavy mobile equipment to move, load, sort, and process scrap metal and materials in a fast-paced industrial environment. The ideal candidate has prior equipment experience, strong situational awareness, and a commitment to working safely around trucks, rail cars, and other moving equipment. SMS provides a comprehensive range of services for steel mill customers. We partner with our customers to design custom, cost-effective solutions, which focus on adding value and achieving goals for the operation and the environment. Our range of services includes, but is not limited scrap yard management, finished or semi-finished product services, melt shop services, logistics/transportation support, and slag processing.

Requirements

Previous heavy equipment operating experience required
Dependable attendance and punctuality required
Ability to work overtime, weekends, or rotating shifts as needed
Ability to work in an industrial steel mill scrap yard environment
Exposure to noise, weather changes, dust, and moving equipment
Ability to climb equipment ladders, sit for extended periods, and perform physical tasks as needed

Nice To Haves

High school diploma or GED preferred
Experience in scrap recycling, steel mill, demolition, construction, or industrial settings preferred
Ability to operate multiple types of equipment is a plus
Strong hand-eye coordination and awareness of surroundings

Responsibilities

Operate heavy equipment such as loaders, excavators, material handlers, skid steers, forklifts, and other mobile equipment
Load and unload trucks, trailers, containers, and rail cars safely and efficiently
Sort, stack, and move scrap metal and raw materials throughout the yard or mill site
Feed processing equipment or production areas as directed
Perform daily pre-shift inspections and basic preventative maintenance checks
Report equipment defects, maintenance needs, or safety concerns promptly
Maintain production flow while following operating procedures
Assist with general yard cleanup and housekeeping duties
Work closely with supervisors, scale operators, mechanics, and other team members
Follow all company safety policies, PPE requirements, and site rules
Maintain awareness of pedestrians, truck traffic, rail activity, and surrounding equipment
Operate equipment responsibly in tight spaces and active industrial areas
Participate in safety meetings and training programs
