About The Position

Under general supervision, operate a variety of heavy motorized equipment utilized in the most difficult or unusual construction, repair, and maintenance operations. This role involves coordinating interactions to attach, set up, start, stop, position, guide, and manipulate intricate powered mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, or pneumatic apparatus to dig, push, pile, or load materials. The operator will monitor instruments and precisely adjust factors like speed, flow, temperature, and pressure when feeding, bearing off, hoisting, and transporting solids or fluids. Responsibilities include sub-grading streets for paving, grading and blading dirt streets and alleys, de-silting basins, cutting and filling water and sewer lines or deep drainage ditches, laying water and sewer mains, and excavating roadbeds. The position also entails performing other complicated construction, repair, maintenance, or operations-related work, including excavating, grading, digging, piling, pushing, and loading a broad range of materials. The operator will inspect the worksite before, during, and following activities, identify, recommend, and undertake work according to priorities and established schedules. Additionally, the role may involve supervising or directing laborers and other workers in routine work assignments, including participating in lead work responsibilities such as assigning or delegating work, reviewing, inspecting, and accepting work, and training and developing employees. Basic equipment maintenance, servicing, and minor repair work are also part of the duties, along with engaging in manual labor as necessary and interacting with other departments, employees, contractors, vendors, or the public.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of experience operating medium or heavy equipment; or one (1) year of experience operating medium or heavy equipment and successful completion of the City of El Paso (ESD) Heavy Equipment Operator Trainee program.
  • Valid Texas Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or equivalent from another state by the date of appointment.
  • Some positions may require a Texas Class "A" CDL or equivalent from another state.
  • CDL may require specialized endorsements depending on the area of assignment.
  • Some positions may require a Municipal Solid Waste Operator Class C License.
  • Positions requiring a CDL or those that are safety-sensitive are subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with federal regulations.
  • Some positions must pass a criminal background check and obtain and maintain federally mandated security clearance for working at an airport.

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment, including, but not limited to, articulated dump trucks and water wagons, rubber-tired and tracked hydraulic excavators, and comparable earth-moving or heavy construction equipment, such as asphalt paver, bulldozer, landfill compactor, milling machine, motor grader, scraper, as assigned.
