SCADA Engineer - EMS

ON.energy•Houston, TX

About The Position

ON.energy is hiring a SCADA Engineer for its EMS team to own the core configuration of the company’s SCADA platform in Ignition, with a focus on tag structures, UDT setup, and communications with field devices. The role supports the HMI and controls teams by developing tools that accelerate SCADA configuration, deployment, and ongoing support across battery energy storage systems (BESS) and grid-connected assets. The engineer will develop and maintain scalable SCADA architectures across OT, DMZ, and cloud environments; improve system performance, reliability, and deployment processes; and troubleshoot systems in development and live production, including field support as needed. The position also supports commissioning, redundancy and disaster-recovery testing, historical data strategies, and the ongoing development of alarm management and SCADA standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience with Ignition, including tag configuration, UDT setup, device connections, and scripting.
  • Working knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as MQTT, Modbus TCP/RTU, OPC UA, or DNP3.
  • Experience building or maintaining scripts or tools that support SCADA configuration, deployment, or validation.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across software and field-level hardware issues.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document technical work for technical and non-technical audiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Ignition Vision or Perspective modules.
  • Understanding of PLC-based control systems and ability to read and interpret control logic.
  • Familiarity with Siemens PLC platforms.
  • Experience with battery energy storage systems (BESS) or renewable energy assets.
  • Experience with SQL databases and historian systems.
  • Familiarity with Azure DevOps or similar work-tracking tools for engineering documentation and issue management.
  • Knowledge of alarm management standards such as ISA 18.2.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish skills.

Responsibilities

  • Configure and maintain Ignition SCADA tags, UDTs, and device connections to provide a consistent, scalable foundation across sites.
  • Design and maintain MQTT-based SCADA communications, including broker configuration, topic structures, and Ignition integration.
  • Integrate SCADA systems with PLCs and other field devices across BESS and grid-connected inverter topologies using protocols such as MQTT, Modbus TCP/RTU, OPC UA, and DNP3.
  • Build and maintain tools for the HMI team, including automated UDT and tag generation, configuration templates, and data validation utilities.
  • Build and maintain tools for the controls team, including scripts for point checkout, configuration comparison, and deployment automation.
  • Improve the efficiency, performance, and reliability of SCADA configuration and deployment processes as the solution scales.
  • Troubleshoot SCADA and communications issues in development and live production environments, providing field support as needed.
  • Support commissioning, including point-to-point checkout, alarm validation, and system testing.
  • Document SCADA configuration standards, tag maps, and MQTT topic structures.
  • Participate in developing company alarm management and SCADA standards.
  • Design and maintain scalable SCADA architectures across OT, DMZ, and cloud environments, including Ignition Gateway Network, Remote Tag Providers, MQTT infrastructure, and historian integrations.
  • Participate in architecture reviews and recommend improvements to system reliability, maintainability, and scalability.
  • Analyze and optimize SCADA performance, including tag execution rates, historian throughput, Gateway Network traffic, database performance, MQTT publish rates, and system resource utilization.
  • Perform root cause analysis for latency, communication bottlenecks, and data quality issues across distributed SCADA systems.
  • Design, configure, and validate redundant SCADA architectures, including Ignition redundancy, redundant MQTT brokers, historian failover, and communications resiliency.
  • Execute disaster recovery and failover testing to ensure high system availability.
  • Design and maintain historical data strategies using Ignition Tag Historian and SQL databases, optimizing storage, retention policies, data compression, and query performance.
