SCADA Engineer - EMS

ON.energy•Miami, FL

About The Position

ON.energy is hiring a SCADA Engineer for its EMS team to own core configuration of the company’s SCADA platform in Ignition, primarily tag structures, UDT setup, and field-device communications. The engineer will support the HMI and controls teams by developing tools to accelerate SCADA configuration, deployment, and ongoing support across battery energy storage systems (BESS) and grid-connected assets. The role includes developing and maintaining scalable SCADA architectures across OT, DMZ, and cloud environments; improving system reliability, maintainability, performance, and scalability; and supporting commissioning and troubleshooting in development, production, and field environments. The engineer will also maintain historical data strategies, redundancy and disaster recovery capabilities, and SCADA configuration and alarm standards. The position requires a bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering field or equivalent practical experience, at least three years of hands-on Ignition experience, working knowledge of industrial communication protocols, and experience creating or maintaining tools for SCADA configuration, deployment, or validation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on Ignition experience, including tag configuration, UDT setup, device connections, and scripting.
  • Working knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as MQTT, Modbus TCP/RTU, OPC UA, or DNP3.
  • Experience building or maintaining scripts or tools that support SCADA configuration, deployment, or validation.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across software and field-level hardware issues.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document technical work for technical and non-technical audiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with the Ignition Vision or Perspective modules; these are a plus but are not the focus of the role.
  • Understanding of PLC-based control systems and ability to read and interpret control logic.
  • Familiarity with Siemens PLC platforms.
  • Experience with battery energy storage systems (BESS) or renewable energy assets.
  • Experience with SQL databases and historian systems.
  • Familiarity with Azure DevOps or similar engineering work-tracking tools.
  • Knowledge of alarm-management standards such as ISA 18.2.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish language skills.

Responsibilities

  • Configure and maintain Ignition SCADA tags, UDTs, and device connections for consistent, scalable site configurations.
  • Design and maintain MQTT-based SCADA communications, including broker configuration, topic structures, and Ignition integration.
  • Integrate SCADA with PLCs and field devices across BESS and grid-connected inverter topologies using protocols such as MQTT, Modbus TCP/RTU, OPC UA, and DNP3.
  • Build tools for the HMI team, including automated UDT and tag generation, configuration templates, and data-validation utilities.
  • Build tools for the controls team, including point-checkout, configuration-comparison, and deployment-automation scripts.
  • Improve the efficiency, performance, and reliability of SCADA configuration and deployment processes.
  • Troubleshoot SCADA and communications issues in development and live production environments, including field support as needed.
  • Support commissioning, including point-to-point checkout, alarm validation, and system testing.
  • Document SCADA configuration standards, tag maps, and MQTT topic structures.
  • Participate in developing company alarm-management and SCADA standards.
  • Design and maintain scalable SCADA architectures across OT, DMZ, and cloud environments, including Ignition Gateway Network, Remote Tag Providers, MQTT infrastructure, and historian integrations.
  • Participate in architecture reviews and propose improvements to reliability, maintainability, and scalability.
  • Analyze and optimize SCADA performance, including tag execution rates, historian throughput, Gateway Network traffic, database performance, MQTT publish rates, and system-resource utilization.
  • Conduct root-cause analysis of latency, communications bottlenecks, and data-quality issues across distributed SCADA systems.
  • Design, configure, and validate redundant SCADA architectures, including Ignition redundancy, redundant MQTT brokers, historian failover, and communications resiliency.
  • Execute disaster-recovery and failover testing to support high system availability.
  • Design and maintain historical data strategies using Ignition Tag Historian and SQL databases.
  • Optimize historian storage, retention policies, data compression, and historical-query performance.
