About The Position

UBC Press produces books integral to Canada’s cultural, political, and social fabric and is widely touted as the country’s pre-eminent social science publisher. Established in 1971 and now offering 1400+ titles in print and 40-60 new works per year, the Press publishes sophisticated and transformative works by authors whose thought and research pushes the boundaries of scholarly discourse and makes a vital contribution to the democratic exchange of ideas. Reporting to the Sales Manager, the Sales and Inventory Coordinator plays a key role in sales, marketing, and inventory activities related to UBC Press publications and those distributed by the Press under agency or distribution agreements. This position actively contributes to the development and implementation of sales campaigns and strategies to ensure growth across all market channels. The incumbent also manages inventory levels in Canada and internationally to ensure the Press is well-positioned to meet demand requirements.

Requirements

  • Diploma in Marketing.
  • Minimum of one year of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • An interest in understanding of the Canadian academic environment and the place of scholarly publications within it.
  • Prior experience in a similar environment would be an asset.
  • Familiarity with trade, text, and scholarly publishing - especially in sales.
  • Experience with the following activities: direct sales email sales campaigns customer service preparation of sales documents or other promotional materials
  • Knowledge of database programmes related to successful sales campaigns and tracking capabilities.
  • Familiar with the use of standard PC applications software, and proficiency with Excel.
  • An aptitude for learning to use new technologies as suitable for sales and inventory management activities.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Capacity to work as a member of a publishing team.

Responsibilities

  • Plays a key role in the development and implementation of sales and direct marketing campaigns and strategies to ensure growth across all market channels.
  • Researches current industry trends and makes recommendations to the Sales Manager.
  • Proactively conducts research on new potential markets and customers for selected titles (including institutional clients, libraries, bookstores, and post-secondary instructors in Canada and the U.S.)
  • Develops materials for direct-to-consumer outreach across all market channels.
  • Creates and executes effective book marketing campaigns, including course adoption campaigns, for new UBC Press publications and books distributed by the Press.
  • Creates and maintains a consistent schedule for distributing campaigns and ensures timely and effective campaign follow-up.
  • Is responsible for sending desk and examination copies to professors.
  • Establishes strong relationships with both existing and prospective customers across all market channels, and acts as a first point of contact for any sales/inventory-related customer service matters.
  • Prepares timely reports for the marketing team about reception and feedback on titles, particularly from course campaigns.
  • Researches and shares information on market trends, customer feedback, and pricing.
  • Makes relevant recommendations as appropriate.
  • Prepares sales materials for conferences and events, ensuring their appropriateness and relevance for the specific event.
  • Contributes ideas and feedback during marketing department and other meetings and is a member of the sales committee.
  • Keeps up-to-date with Anti-Spam Legislation and ensures compliance in campaign activities.
  • Collaborates with marketing colleagues to determine the level of UBC Press and agency stock that should be on hand domestically to fill to the department’s requirements for sales, book launches, conferences, special purchases, and so forth.
  • Facilitates monthly stock transfers of UBC Press and agency titles to international warehouses to ensure adequate stock levels are maintained.
  • Strategically balances needs for stock availability against the cost of air freight and other expedited shipping methods.
  • Performs regular reprint reports and communicates numbers to Production Editorial to ensure adequate stock of UBC Press titles is maintained.
  • Liaises with new client agencies to facilitate the transfer of stock into the Canadian distribution warehouse, and closes out agencies upon termination of the contract by arranging the timely removal (or pulping) of stock from the Canadian distribution warehouse.
  • Handles and resolves all customer service issues related to inventory availability and fulfilment not already addressed by customer service in the warehouses.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
