About The Position
The Safety Specialist develops, coordinates, monitors, and manages the institution’s safety programs at Lunenburg Correctional Center. The role is responsible for fire prevention, safety, health, hazardous materials communication, occupational safety regulations, and sanitation. It includes managing institutional inspections, providing employee fire and safety training, coordinating required reports with local, state, and federal agencies, and maintaining documentation needed to comply with Department of Corrections standards. The position also assists with pest control at the institution.
Requirements
- General knowledge of safety and environmental regulations, principles, techniques, laws, and regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and present institutional plans and programs.
- Ability to teach or train in a classroom setting.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to delegate efficiently.
Nice To Haves
- Experience related to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Virginia Department of Fire Programs (VDFP) regulations.
- Experience preparing reports.
- Previous experience working in corrections.
- Experience with Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations.
- Certification in the occupational safety and health field or another local, state, or federal safety program.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
