About The Position

The Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS), Executive Support Office, is hiring a Safety Specialist I in Pearl City. This position assists the Safety Specialist II in implementing BWS safety programs and ensuring Department compliance with applicable OSHA, HIOSH, and other regulatory agency requirements.

Requirements

  • Citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
  • Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in business administration, public administration, or a related field. Substitution: Work experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • Four (4) years of professional work experience, in any occupation, may substitute for a general bachelor's degree.
  • Four (4) years of general work experience (does not need to be professional level experience) in industrial safety may substitute for a general bachelor's degree.
  • One year of professional experience in industrial safety and accident prevention activities.
  • Knowledge of: safety laws and other accepted standards applicable to industrial safety and accident prevention, industrial and construction accident hazards and methods of correction and prevention, common industrial safety devices and equipment, safety inspection principles, practices, and procedures, safety education media, principles, and procedures.
  • Ability to: make safety inspections and detect unsafe conditions and practices, interpret and enforce pertinent safety laws, codes, rules, and regulations; investigate and determine the causes of accidents, conduct safety education and instruction courses.
  • Possession of a valid appropriate driver's license (automobile/Type 3).

  • First Aid & CPR certification (prior to completion of probation).

Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections of in-progress repair, maintenance, and project sites, including job sites of private contractors engaged in construction on behalf of the BWS.
  • Develop materials and visual aids for Safety Specialist II for training sessions; conduct, schedule, and coordinate training with divisions.
  • Inspect facility working conditions, equipment, and protective gear.
  • Conduct investigations of accidents.
  • Provide sound interpretation of pertinent laws, codes, rules and regulations as it applies to BWS projects, and ensure compliance with OSHA, HIOSH, EPA and other applicable regulatory agencies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
