About The Position

General Motors’ Global Product Safety, Systems and Certification organization is seeking a Safety Performance Integration Engineer focused on Structure Performance. The role develops and validates vehicle crash safety systems for future vehicle programs and is responsible for crashworthiness development of vehicle structures. The engineer supports vehicle development projects through initiative, creativity, independent judgment, and project management, synthesizes physical and virtual test results against safety technical requirements, collaborates with global teams, and provides technical direction across functional groups. The position uses computer-aided engineering (CAE) and physical testing to guide vehicle design and evaluate full-vehicle crashworthiness. The engineer develops design recommendations and technical solutions to meet safety targets, works with engineering functions, program teams, suppliers, and manufacturing to implement changes, and uses advanced analysis and optimization methods to improve structural designs. The role also supports physical safety testing at the Milford Vehicle Proving Grounds and presents performance status at regular forums. The role is categorized as hybrid, with the selected candidate expected to report to a specific location at least three times per week or at another frequency set by their manager. Travel is less than 25%. Relocation benefits are available to candidates who qualify under company policy. GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, preferably Mechanical Engineering, or a related field of study.
  • At least 4 years of combined experience applying virtual CAE, CAE design, and/or physical testing related to vehicle development, particularly with LS-DYNA.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and adapt quickly.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong analytical ability to solve challenging problems and integrate complex systems.
  • Knowledge of statistical and optimization tools and techniques.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s or PhD in Engineering, Physics, or Math.
  • Experience in virtual CAE and physical testing for automotive structure crashworthiness.
  • Knowledge of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).
  • Experience with ANSA.
  • Working knowledge of Unigraphics, TeamCenter, and VisMockup.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and validate vehicle crash safety systems for future vehicle programs.
  • Lead crashworthiness development of vehicle structures for GM vehicle programs.
  • Apply GM Safety CAE standard work procedures to deliver quality models and simulation results.
  • Use CAE to guide vehicle design while balancing applicable global safety requirements.
  • Perform full-vehicle crashworthiness CAE simulations for high-speed frontal, side, and/or rear impact load cases using LS-DYNA.
  • Develop timely, feasible vehicle design recommendations and technical solutions to meet safety performance targets and balance performance across major safety load cases.
  • Work with engineering functions, program teams, suppliers, manufacturing, and other groups to implement design changes.
  • Use advanced CAE tools and methods, including Variation Study, DOE, DFSS, and MDO, to optimize structural designs and improve structural efficiency.
  • Support physical safety testing at the Milford Vehicle Proving Grounds, including test requests, testing, post-test teardowns, interpretation of results, issue resolution follow-through, and comparison of CAE with test results.
  • Present performance status regularly at appropriate forums.
  • Synthesize physical and virtual test results against safety technical requirements and provide technical direction across functional groups.

Benefits

  • Relocation benefits are available for candidates who qualify under company policy.
  • GM provides well-being support at work and at home; details are available through its Total Rewards resources.
