About The Position

The Safety Manager is responsible for overseeing and implementing safety programs within the organization. This role involves strategic planning, reporting on safety KPIs, investigating incidents, and ensuring compliance with various regulations. The Safety Manager will lead the implementation of the Safety Management System, conduct safety audits, and promote a strong safety culture throughout the workplace. This position requires a blend of technical knowledge, strong communication skills, and the ability to foster positive working relationships.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required.
  • Must be a certified Transportation Safety Institute (TSI) bus operator trainer.
  • Must Have with Class “B” Commercial Driver License.
  • Must have at least 3 years’ progressive transit experience with commercial class “B” vehicles in a fixed route transit system.
  • Knowledgeable with DOT policies, OSHA, NIMS, EPA standards and ADA requirements.
  • Experience developing and implementing safety program plans and procedures; conducting investigations, analyzing data, and identifying and recommending corrective action.
  • Must maintain confidentiality and safeguarding of sensitive material.
  • Conducting oral presentations, relaying technical information in understandable terms.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a diverse workforce.
  • Possess a working knowledge of adult education principles and practices.
  • Possess the skills necessary to write and express oneself orally in a logical, comprehensive, and intelligent manner, as well as good organizational skills.
  • Possess the temperament necessary for maintaining amiable relations with various levels of company personnel.
  • Possess a working knowledge of Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word.
  • Ability to interpret and explain regulations to others.
  • Must have excellent communication skills (written and oral).
  • Excellent time management skills with ability to prioritize.
  • Passing a pre-employment drug screen and a physical examination.
  • Completion of a background check.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate monthly safety reporting, including performance trends, KPI delivery, and safety risk assessments.
  • Inform the location leadership team of safety performance and provide timely alerts.
  • Drive a continuous improvement culture in safety performance to improve leading and lagging indicators.
  • Chair Safety and Accident Review committees.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and work-related injuries, including report generation, file management, and follow-up with claims offices.
  • Direct the Drug and Alcohol Program (FTA) for the location to ensure federal and corporate compliance.
  • Manage Third Party Administrators and Vendors for the Drug and Alcohol Program.
  • Lead the site implementation of the Safety Management System Plan, including comprehensive safety policies, procedures, and tools.
  • Monitor compliance with the KTA’s SMS policies and procedures and conduct annual safety audits.
  • Ensure all relevant statutory and regulatory safety policies are applied and adhered to.
  • Assist the maintenance manager in ensuring compliance with environmental policies and regulations.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of risk control strategies.
  • Identify and assess new hazards introduced in the workplace.
  • Oversee ongoing monitoring and recording of safety performance.
  • Establish and maintain a culture of safety where safety is a primary consideration for all employees.
  • Contribute to the safety culture through exemplary safety-oriented behaviors.
  • Ensure a just culture within the organization where employees are treated fairly and understand their contribution to the safety philosophy.
  • Oversee classroom and designated instructors to ensure quality, consistency, and efficiency in training methods.
  • Oversee the design and delivery of driver training and safety courses, including new hire and accident retraining.
  • Plan, schedule, and deliver monthly safety meetings.
