About The Position

The Safety Manager is responsible for overseeing and implementing safety programs, ensuring compliance with regulations, and promoting a culture of safety within the organization. This role involves strategic planning, incident investigation, safety promotion, and managing safety systems. The position requires a strong understanding of transportation safety, DOT policies, OSHA, NIMS, EPA standards, and ADA requirements. The Safety Manager will also be involved in training, reporting, and ensuring the overall safety performance of the location.

Requirements

High school diploma required; college degree preferred.
Must be a certified Transportation Safety Institute (TSI) bus operator trainer.
Must have a Class “B” Commercial Driver License.
Prefer candidate with Airbrakes, and Passenger endorsements and valid active medical examiners certificate.
Must have at least 3 years’ progressive transit experience with commercial class “B” vehicles in a fixed route transit system.
Knowledgeable with DOT policies, OSHA, NIMS, EPA standards and ADA requirements.
Experience developing and implementing safety program plans and procedures; conducting investigations, analyzing data, and identifying and recommending corrective action.
Must maintain confidentiality and safeguarding of sensitive material.
Conducting oral presentations, relaying technical information in understandable terms.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a diverse workforce.
Possess a working knowledge of adult education principles and practices.
Possess the skills necessary to write and express oneself orally in a logical, comprehensive, and intelligent manner, as well as good organizational skills.
Possess the temperament necessary for maintaining amiable relations with various levels of company personnel.
Possess a working knowledge of Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word.
Ability to interpret and explain regulations to others.
Must have excellent communication skills (written and oral).
Excellent time management skills with ability to prioritize.

Responsibilities

Coordinate monthly safety reporting, including performance trends in safety KPIs and delivery against location safety plans and safety risk assessment.
Ensure the location leadership team is informed of safety performance with timely alerts.
Drive a continuous improvement culture in safety performance by collaborating with the location to improve leading and lagging indicators (e.g., AFR and IFR).
Chair Safety and Accident Review committees.
Investigate incidents, accidents, and work-related injuries, including accident investigation, reports, files, and register, and follow up with the claims office and adjusters.
Effectively direct the Drug and Alcohol Program (FTA) for the location to ensure complete federal and corporate compliance.
Manage Third Party Administrators and Vendors.
Lead the site implementation of the Safety Management System Plan, comprehensive safety policies, procedures, and tools to enhance compliance with corporate direction and reduce accidents/injuries.
Monitor compliance with the KTA’s SMS policies and procedures, conducting an annual safety audit.
Ensure all relevant statutory and regulatory safety policies are applied and adhered to.
Assist the maintenance manager in ensuring compliance with environmental policies and regulations.
Monitor and evaluate the continued effectiveness of risk control strategies.
Identify and assess new hazards introduced in the workplace.
Oversee ongoing monitoring and recording of safety performance.
Establish and maintain a culture of safety so that safety is the front-of-mind consideration for all employees and a way of life within the organization.
Contribute to the safety culture through displaying exemplary safety-oriented behaviors.
Ensure a just culture within the organization where all employees are treated fairly and justly and understand their contribution to the organization’s safety philosophy.
Oversee classroom and designated instructors to ensure quality, consistency, and efficiency in training methods.
Oversee the design and delivery of driver training and safety courses, including new hire and accident retraining.
Plan, schedule, and deliver monthly safety meetings.
