About The Position

The Safety Manager is responsible for overseeing and directing driver training, coaching, and orientation functions across the organization. This role plays a critical part in developing, implementing, and continuously improving driver onboarding and training programs to ensure the highest standards of safety, compliance, customer service, and operational excellence. The Safety Manager serves as a subject matter expert on safety-related issues while partnering closely with operations, recruiting, and safety leadership to reduce risk and promote a strong safety culture throughout the company.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in safety control, risk management, or a related field, and at least three (3) years of safety or risk management experience. An equivalent combination may be considered.
  • At least two (2) years of supervisory or people management experience
  • Working knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and other applicable safety regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal formats
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or related business software
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a safety-sensitive environment

Nice To Haves

  • A bachelor’s degree in safety, risk management, or a related field, and five (5) or more years of experience in transportation or logistics safety.
  • Experience in trucking, transit, delivery, or a related transportation industry
  • Certified trainer or safety professional credentials such as Smith System, NSC, or CDL instructor certification
  • Experience using learning management systems, simulation training, telematics data, or modern training technologies

Responsibilities

  • Lead, supervise, and guide safety staff in their assigned processes and responsibilities
  • Design, implement, and manage comprehensive training programs for new and existing drivers
  • Provide coaching related to accidents, incidents, cargo claims, hours of service, and driver behavior
  • Ensure all training and safety programs meet federal, state, and industry regulations, including FMCSA, DOT, and OSHA requirements
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on safety issues involving drivers, equipment, freight, and external clients
  • Identify safety risks and implement strategies to reduce incidents and regulatory exposure
  • Assist with administration and oversight of the DOT drug and alcohol testing program
  • Partner with safety leadership and operational teams to address high-risk behaviors and accident reduction initiatives
  • Recruit, interview, hire, train, and evaluate safety department employees
  • Establish performance goals, deliver feedback, and conduct performance evaluations
  • Manage discipline and terminations in accordance with company policies
  • Participate in the safety department on-call rotation to provide after-hours driver support when assigned
  • Build strong working relationships with Operations, HR, Recruiting, Safety, and Fleet Maintenance teams
