About The Position

As our Roll Operator, you’ll be the person who turns flat steel plate into precision-formed cylinders, cones, and structural shapes that go straight to our welding and fabrication lines. This is a critical, high-visibility position — your accuracy and consistency directly determine whether our production floor keeps moving. We need someone on 2nd shift who owns their work, reads drawings confidently, and takes pride in putting out parts that fit right the first time.

Requirements

  • 2+ years operating plate or section rolls in a steel fabrication, welding, or heavy industrial environment.
  • Ability to read blueprints, flat patterns, and weld symbols; solid shop math and measurement skills (tape to 1/32", fractions/decimals).
  • Overhead crane and forklift experience with competent rigging skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly; comfortable working indoors/outdoors in a fabrication environment (heat, noise, dust).
  • Proven safety record and track record of meeting production schedules and quality standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience rolling heavy plate (A36, A572, AR) and large diameters, including prebending and cone rolling.
  • Basic welding/tacking skills and knowledge of distortion control for cylindrical assemblies.
  • Familiarity with shop ERP/production systems and quality documentation.
  • Forklift certification and prior LOTO training.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate plate/section rolls to form steel to precise radii, diameters, and tolerances per drawings and work orders.
  • Read and interpret shop drawings, flat patterns, and process travelers; verify dimensions with tape measures, squares, and templates.
  • Select the correct pinch/roll sequence, back gauge positions, and machine parameters to achieve true roundness with minimal flats.
  • Safely handle material using overhead cranes and forklifts; apply proper rigging, slings, and hooks.
  • Partner with welders on rolled cylinders, cones, and segments — tacking for fit-up, alignment, and distortion control.
  • Conduct in-process inspections and document results (radius, diameter, seam gap, straightness).
  • Deburr, mark, and stage completed parts; update system moves and inventory as required.
  • Complete pre-shift equipment checks; report maintenance needs and assist with minor adjustments.
  • Maintain a clean, safe 5S-compliant work area and follow all LOTO/PPE/safety requirements.
