Robot Assembly Technician - Hands

1X Technologies ASSan Carlos, CA
Onsite

About The Position

As an Assembly Technician on the Hands team at 1X, you will build high-precision electromechanical subassemblies at the component level for our humanoid robots. This is detailed, fine-motor work — you'll be handling parts measured in millimeters, working with fasteners smaller than M2, and assembling to micron-level tolerances. The work involves PCBs, small motors, encoders, and delicate wire harnesses with fine-pitch connectors — all in an ESD-controlled environment. You'll need steady hands, sharp eyes, and proven experience working with miniature components and precision tooling. Your ability to interpret engineering drawings, verify critical dimensions, and catch defects at the workstation level directly impacts the quality and reliability of every robot that leaves the line.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in precision electromechanical assembly, micro assembly, or similar fine-component manufacturing (e.g., humanoid robotics, medical devices, aerospace actuators, consumer electronics internals, optical assemblies)
  • Demonstrated experience assembling miniature components — small motors, gearboxes, encoders, PCBs, connectors, or similarly delicate parts
  • Proficiency with precision hand tools and calibrated torque instruments at low torque values
  • Ability to read and work from engineering drawings and detailed work instructions independently
  • Hands-on experience with dimensional inspection and precision measurement tools (micrometers, gauge pins, dial indicators, or equivalent)
  • Working knowledge of ESD handling procedures and controlled-environment protocols
  • Excellent fine motor skills and manual dexterity — comfortable performing detailed, repetitive work with very small parts for extended periods
  • Strong attention to detail with a quality-first mindset
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality; able to work scheduled shifts consistently
  • Able to work in a team environment with clear communication across shifts

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with MES or ERP systems (e.g., Odoo, SAP, or similar) for production tracking and work order management
  • Background in robotic, actuator, gearbox, or servo assembly
  • Familiarity with thermal compounds or adhesives (e.g., Loctite)
  • Experience handling hot parts or working near thermal processing equipment
  • Soldering experience (through-hole or SMT rework)
  • Experience with vision inspection systems or digital measurement tools
  • Experience with firmware flashing or programming of embedded components
  • Familiarity with functional testing of PCBs, small motors, encoders, or similar electromechanical assemblies (e.g., continuity checks, run-in testing, performance validation)
  • Lean manufacturing, 5S, or continuous improvement experience

Responsibilities

  • Assemble and integrate precision electromechanical subassemblies including small motors, gearboxes, encoders, PCBs, and wire harnesses with fine-pitch connectors
  • Work with miniature fasteners (sub-M2) and apply controlled torque at fine specifications (as low as ~1 Nm) using calibrated tools
  • Handle and install ESD-sensitive components following proper grounding and handling procedures throughout the assembly process
  • Read and interpret detailed engineering drawings, work instructions, and assembly diagrams to build to specification
  • Perform in-process dimensional inspection and measurement to micron-level tolerances using precision instruments (micrometers, pin gauges, dial indicators, calipers, vision systems, or similar)
  • Conduct visual inspections for workmanship defects, component damage, and assembly conformance
  • Route, dress, and secure delicate wire harnesses and connectors without damage to conductors or terminations
  • Maintain accurate production records including build logs, inspection data, and defect reporting
  • Keep your workstation clean, organized, and compliant with ESD and safety standards
  • Communicate quality issues, process deviations, or material discrepancies to your supervisor or quality team promptly
  • Collaborate across shifts and with engineering to support continuous improvement and production goals

Benefits

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off and holidays
