The RN provides direct, age-specific nursing care to patients or groups of patients according to medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care. The role supports patients and families through illness and injury prevention, wellness maintenance, and comfort care; safely administers prescribed medications while identifying incompatibilities or interactions; and accurately documents care. Depending on clinical level, the nurse applies clinical knowledge to a patient population, recognizes or anticipates changes in patient condition and intervenes appropriately, mobilizes resources for individualized patient and family needs, and provides direction and education. Clinical Nurses II and III assume unit-level leadership responsibilities or serve as clinical role models. The position follows provider orders, Virginia nursing regulations, the ANA Code of Ethics, national nursing practice standards, and VCUHS policies and procedures. Nurses organize work and may delegate and supervise assignments carried out by RNs, LPNs, care partners, and unit secretaries. Schedules may include all three shifts, weekends, and holidays; shift rotations and hours are set with the Nurse Manager or Practice Manager and may be adjusted to meet unit needs.
