About The Position

Johnston-Willis Hospital is seeking an RN Student Nurse Extern for its GYN Surgery Unit. As a valued member of the nursing team, the Nurse Extern gains hands-on experience exploring the scope of the Registered Nurse role while supporting safe, compassionate patient care. The position helps build skills and confidence for taking on more advanced responsibilities as the employee progresses through an RN program.

The hospital is part of HCA Healthcare and is a 290-plus-bed acute care facility serving Greater Richmond and the Tri-Cities area. It provides a range of healthcare services, including cancer care and neuroscience services.

Requirements

• Actively attending an accredited RN program.
• Obtain Basic Cardiac Life Support certification within 30 days of employment start date.
• No previous work experience is required.

Responsibilities

• Provide essential patient care, including assistance with activities of daily living, vital-sign checks, mobility, comfort, and hygiene.
• Perform nursing tasks such as wound care, catheter care, specimen collection, and other basic procedures as competency develops.
• Document care accurately and communicate timely updates to the nursing team.
• Help patients and families understand care plans and provide guidance related to health and recovery.
• Maintain clean, safe, and organized patient areas by following infection-prevention practices and managing equipment.
• Participate in learning opportunities, share ideas to improve care, and work with a supervisor or preceptor on a personal career development plan.
