RN Student Nurse Extern Surgical Care Unit
About The Position
Johnston-Willis Hospital is hiring an RN Student Nurse Extern for its Surgical Care Unit. The extern is a valued member of the nursing team who gains hands-on experience exploring the scope of the Registered Nurse role. The position supports safe, compassionate patient care while helping the extern build skills and confidence for more advanced responsibilities as they progress through their nursing program. The role includes assisting patients with activities of daily living, vital signs, mobility, comfort, and hygiene; performing basic nursing tasks as competency develops; documenting care and communicating updates to the nursing team; helping patients and families understand care plans; and maintaining clean, safe patient areas. The extern is also expected to participate in learning opportunities, contribute ideas for improving care, and work with a supervisor or preceptor on a personal career development plan.
Requirements
- Actively enrolled in an accredited Registered Nurse nursing program.
- Obtain Basic Cardiac Life Support within 30 days of employment start date.
- No previous work experience is required.
Responsibilities
- Provide essential patient care, including assistance with activities of daily living, vital signs, mobility, comfort, and hygiene.
- Perform nursing tasks such as wound care, catheter care, specimen collection, and other basic procedures as experience and competency develop.
- Document care accurately and communicate timely updates to the nursing team.
- Help patients and families understand care plans and provide guidance related to health and recovery.
- Maintain clean and safe patient areas by following infection-prevention practices, managing equipment, and keeping the environment organized.
- Participate in learning opportunities, share ideas to improve care, and partner with a supervisor or preceptor to develop a personal career development plan.
