RN Student Nurse Extern Medical Care Unit
About The Position
Johnston-Willis Hospital is seeking a Nurse Extern to join its nursing team in the Medical Care Unit. The extern gains hands-on experience with the scope of the Registered Nurse role while supporting safe, compassionate patient care and developing skills for increased responsibilities during their nursing program. The role supports patients with daily care and basic nursing tasks, documents care, communicates with the nursing team, and helps patients and families understand care plans. The extern also contributes to infection prevention and safe, organized patient areas, and participates in learning and career-development opportunities with a supervisor or preceptor. Johnston-Willis Hospital is part of HCA Healthcare and offers a broad range of healthcare services. The hospital has more than 290 beds and serves Greater Richmond and the Tri-Cities area.
Requirements
- Actively enrolled in an accredited Registered Nursing program.
- Obtain Basic Cardiac Life Support within 30 days of employment start date.
- No previous work experience is required.
Responsibilities
- Assist patients with activities of daily living, vital signs, mobility, comfort, and hygiene.
- Perform nursing tasks such as wound care, catheter care, specimen collection, and other basic procedures as competency develops.
- Document care accurately and provide timely updates to the nursing team.
- Help patients and families understand care plans and provide guidance related to health and recovery.
- Maintain clean, safe, and organized patient areas by following infection-prevention practices and managing equipment.
- Participate in learning opportunities, share ideas to improve care, and work with a supervisor or preceptor on a personal career development plan.
