About The Position

The Surgical Student Extern provides direct and indirect technical care to surgical and obstetric patients across the age spectrum, helping facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. The role follows established practices and standards and supports the mission, policies, and procedures of Valley Baptist Health System. The extern completes required competencies within the designated introductory period and performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Currently enrolled in an approved Surgical Tech degree program.
• Successfully completed a basic clinical skills lab; a skills checklist may be used to validate experience.
• BLS certification obtained through an approved American Heart Association.

Responsibilities

• Escort or transport patients, using appropriate transfer techniques when required.
• Set up the operating room with supplies and equipment according to scheduled case requirements and maintain the physician’s preference card.
• Promote and maintain a sterile environment in all job assignments.
• Perform scrubbing and circulating duties as directed.
• Complete assigned operating room cleanup tasks, including disposal, cleaning, inventory, and restocking of supplies and equipment.
• Assist with more complicated treatments, diagnostic procedures, and physical examinations as instructed by a registered nurse and after documented competency.
• Assist perioperative team members in providing care throughout the perioperative experience.
• Perform clerical functions in support of department operations.
• Participate in department meetings and in-services.
• Serve as a role model for service excellence and commit to Studer Principles and “must haves.”
