About The Position

The UT Southwestern February 2027 (Cohort 22) RN Residency Program is a planned, comprehensive program designed for new nurse graduates and experienced RNs with less than 12 months of experience. The program aims to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to deliver safe, quality care in specific clinical settings, supporting organizational enculturation, practice-based learning, and professional development over a 12-month period. Specialties accepting residents include Acute Medical Specialty and Acute Surgical Specialty. The program begins on February 8, 2027, with specific requirements for graduate nurses to have their license posted by February 1, 2027.

Requirements

  • BSN and minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Texas RN license
  • Active American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support certification
  • Completed online application
  • Resume showing all work experience, involvement in professional organizations, and history of volunteerism
  • Transcript (most recent–unofficial is acceptable) with 3.0 GPA or higher
  • Internal candidates must apply as an internal candidate and upload a letter of recommendation from current manager
  • Graduate Nurses are required to have their license posted on the board of nursing before close of business on February 1, 2027.
  • Bachelor's Degree Candidates are new nurse graduates with a minimum of a Bachelor's degree who have graduated from an ACEN or CCNE accredited/state approved program or Associate's Degree (ADN) with current UTSW experience.
  • Current Texas (or BNE Compact State) license
  • BASIC LIFE SUPPORT Course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC).

  • BSN graduates from the May 2026, August 2026, and December 2026 graduating classes
  • Experienced BSN RNs who will have less than 12 months RN experience at start of program (February 2027)

Responsibilities

  • Performs and accurately documents physical, psychosocial, and emotional assessments, considering age-specific criteria.
  • Anticipates patient and/or patient's family needs and expectations to develop an appropriate plan of care, utilizing critical thinking and prioritizing nursing care.
  • Identifies and implements appropriate nursing interventions based on assessment and accurately documents these interventions.
  • Acts as a coordinator of the interdisciplinary plan of care, collaborating with the healthcare team.
  • Promptly identifies changes in patient condition and takes appropriate follow-up action.
  • Evaluates implemented interventions and modifies the care plan as needed, documenting accurately.
  • Adheres to hospital and Department of Nursing policies, procedures, clinical pathways, and nationally accepted standards of nursing practice.
  • Provides appropriate and timely education to patients and families, documenting all education provided and assessing understanding.
  • Welcomes and orients patients/families to the unit, encouraging participation in care and explaining procedures and medications.
  • Assumes accountability for all actions, reporting errors promptly and taking appropriate follow-up action.
  • Acts as an effective patient/family advocate, responding to complaints and utilizing the chain of command appropriately.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities, staff meetings, and mandatory educational sessions.
  • Provides supervision and direction to unlicensed support personnel and nurses new to the environment, delegating duties appropriately.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
