The RN will care for patients in a 36-bed ICU (licensed for 44 beds). The unit treats cardiac, PCI, open-heart, sepsis, alcohol-related, stroke, CABG, stent, balloon-pump, and craniotomy patients. PACU patients go directly to the ICU. Travelers are not assigned fresh open-heart or craniotomy patients and do not need experience in those areas; general medical-surgical ICU nursing experience is needed. Patient ratios are 1:2 or 1:1. The unit uses Cerner PowerChart and hardwired monitors, with a monitor technician but no centralized monitoring. Nurses may manage drips such as vasopressors, nitroglycerin, and heparin, as well as ventilated patients. Hospitalist or intensivist coverage is in-house 24/7, as are respiratory therapy and pharmacy services. There is no IV team. A charge nurse is available and does not take a patient assignment. The unit has no nurse aides, but a unit technician performs secretary and equipment duties. Shifts are 12 hours: 0645–1915 or 1845–0715. Self-scheduling is not available. Nurses work every other weekend, including Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and are expected to work holidays as part of the permanent staff rotation. Floating to Tele and the ER for ICU holds is required. Orientation includes one day in the ICU and one shift on the Tele/stepdown unit. Scrub color is navy blue.
