The RN works in 1H, a 22-bed adult critical care unit at Blodgett Hospital, caring for medical ICU patients and some surgical ICU patients. The unit treats a wide range of diagnoses, including stroke, sepsis, diabetic ketoacidosis, and respiratory failure. Nurses participate in ICU-level care involving ventilators, sedation, paralytics, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), post-cardiac-arrest cooling, and ICU thrombolytic therapy. The unit includes nurses with varied experience levels on day and night shifts and emphasizes teaching and support for new staff. Nurses collaborate with ICU providers, respiratory care, physical therapy, pharmacy, social work, and other team members to meet patient needs. Under the ANA scope of practice and the direction of the Nurse Leader, the RN uses the nursing process to provide professional, quality nursing care. The RN incorporates patient- and family-centered care principles to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and discharge; partners with patients and families to include their input and goals in care planning; develops teaching strategies; and documents education and learning in the health record. Blodgett Hospital is a 330-bed acute care teaching hospital in East Grand Rapids and a Level III trauma campus. The position is full-time, works the night shift, and is scheduled for 36 hours per week.
