About The Position

Akumin is a provider of outpatient radiology and oncology services. The RIS Team Lead / Manager leads the engineering and support team responsible for designing, configuring, optimizing, integrating, and managing enterprise radiology workflows across RIS and PACS platforms. The role combines people leadership, workflow architecture, and systems integration, providing strategic oversight and technical guidance to RIS analysts, workflow specialists, and integration engineers. It serves as a liaison among technical engineering, clinical operations, radiologist groups, revenue cycle leadership, and software vendors to ensure radiology workflows are standardized, resilient, scalable, and aligned with clinical and financial objectives. The position oversees team performance and development, workload prioritization, operational governance, and enterprise configuration standards. It drives end-to-end workflow optimization across multi-site imaging centers, including procedure catalogs, modality protocols, scheduling rules, throughput, patient access, and clean claim capture. The role also governs interoperability and data flows among EHR, RIS, PACS, VNA, and third-party systems; oversees reporting and voice-recognition integrations; and leads or supports enterprise migrations, deployments, upgrades, and stabilization. The successful candidate has a strong understanding of radiology operations, revenue cycle dependencies, healthcare interoperability, service management, and change management. Akumin describes the role as helping scale its imaging network, improve patient access and provider satisfaction, accelerate report turnaround times, and support organizational financial health.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Informatics, Computer Science, Information Technology, Healthcare Administration, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in healthcare clinical applications, with dedicated expertise in RIS and PACS ecosystems.
  • 2+ years of demonstrated experience in a team lead, supervisory, or technical project management capacity.
  • In-depth understanding of radiology business operations, multi-facility scheduling matrices, technologist workflows, and radiologist reading worklists.
  • Strong command of healthcare revenue cycle dependencies, including CPT/HCPCS coding accuracy, ICD-10 cross-referencing, authorization capture, and electronic charge posting.
  • Solid technical understanding of healthcare interoperability standards and protocols, including HL7 v2/v3, DICOM, FHIR, and IHE Scheduled Workflow profiles.
  • Experience with IT Service Management tools, ticket triage, SLA monitoring, and formal Change Management processes.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to translate complex technical concepts into actionable strategies for clinical and executive stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical, forensic troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis skills.
  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities and deliver projects on time in dynamic healthcare environments.
  • Ability to foster accountability and collaboration, connect technical configuration choices to clinical, operational, and financial outcomes, deliver complex projects and incident resolutions, and align cross-functional stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop RIS analysts and clinical systems specialists; conduct performance evaluations, set operational objectives, and establish technical career paths.
  • Manage team capacity and prioritize daily break-fix support, workflow optimization, enterprise project deliverables, and major system rollouts.
  • Establish and enforce best practices, standard operating procedures, change management protocols, and documentation standards for enterprise RIS configuration.
  • Serve as the primary technical and operational liaison among clinical operations, IT/interoperability teams, revenue cycle management leadership, and software vendors.
  • Design, standardize, and continuously refine end-to-end radiology workflows across multi-site and regional imaging centers.
  • Govern the architecture and maintenance of procedure catalogs, modality exam protocols, and scheduling rules to support clinical throughput, turnaround time, patient access, and clean claim capture.
  • Identify operational bottlenecks, scheduling friction points, and communication gaps, and develop data-driven technical and workflow interventions.
  • Partner with Interoperability and PACS teams to oversee and validate HL7, DICOM, and FHIR data streams and data integrity across EHR, RIS, PACS, VNA, and third-party portals.
  • Design and implement message routing rules, error queues, and exception-handling workflows to prevent dropped orders and delayed diagnostic reports.
  • Oversee integration between RIS, dictation and speech-recognition systems, and clinical distribution channels.
  • Lead or support enterprise RIS migrations, platform consolidations, site expansions, and major version upgrades from conception through stabilization.
  • Direct project workstreams, including technical scoping, workflow mapping, configuration, user acceptance testing, training curriculum development, cutover planning, and post-launch hypercare.
  • Monitor support ticket trends, KPIs, and user feedback, and implement automated triage, self-service enhancements, and platform stability measures.
