Rights Owner

Muse GroupMilwaukee, WI

About The Position

Muse Group builds tools and platforms used by millions of musicians, educators, creators and music partners around the world. Our ecosystem combines music notation, learning, creator tools, publishing, content and technology. We are building a new Rights Growth engine at the intersection of content, product, data and commercial partnerships. The opportunity is to make rights easier to activate, use and monetize across Muse products and partner channels, while creating a more transparent and scalable experience for rights owners. We are looking for a Rights Owner to build and lead this new growth area. You will own the commercial outcome of a portfolio of strategic rights-owner relationships. You will work across product, technology, licensing, royalty operations, finance and commercial teams to turn content and rights into clear product value, revenue and contribution margin. This is a builder role. You will start with a focused portfolio of strategic partners, establish the operating model and create the playbook for how Muse grows rights-led revenue over time. The role is expected to evolve into ownership of the Rights Growth P&L, including the growth strategy, partner portfolio, commercial model and team. This is an opportunity to build a new commercial growth engine inside a global music technology and content ecosystem. You will have the ability to shape how strategic content partnerships create value across products, customers and markets. You will work with a strong cross-functional leadership group, build the operating model from the ground up and have a clear path to own a growing P&L and business vertical.

Requirements

  • 7–10 years in music publishing / licensing / rights or in commercial roles in music-tech; fluent in both catalog language and platform economics (see archetypes below).
  • Has owned a commercial outcome — P&L, quota or portfolio revenue — not only managed relationships.
  • Proven stakeholder management without authority: a track record of getting delivery from legal, product, ops and finance teams they didn't manage.
  • Practical experience of working with artificial intelligence tools, and a mindset focused on automating processes.
  • Negotiation experience with rights holders / partners, including difficult renewals.
  • Strong written communication — partner-facing documents go out almost unedited.
  • US-based; able to travel to partners regularly.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on with AI/data tooling — has personally built automations and workflows (reporting, research, pipeline), not only commissioned them.

Responsibilities

  • Identify demand & acquire rights (DRI). Use customer, partner and product insight to define where Muse should acquire or expand rights. Own the acquisition target scorecard (upfront cost, timeline, coverage, legal complexity, margin, retention risk) and deal-structure economics (upfront vs revenue-share vs hybrid); source and prioritize targets with Licensing.
  • Structure & execute agreements (input). Define the commercial case and operating requirements each agreement must reflect; Licensing and Legal own negotiation, contracts and rights interpretation.
  • Implement rights & make them ready (escalation owner). Own commercial-readiness priorities per partner catalog and escalate blockers; Tech (MuseDB) and Royalty Operations deliver the work.
  • Activate in products & offers (DRI). Own the partner product thesis, offer design and expected economics. Maintain the single prioritized activation backlog that makes rights commercially useful across Muse products; drive quantified items into delivery teams' monthly plans (planning rule).
  • Sell, manage & expand (DRI). Own the partner growth plan, the monthly management P&L (direct revenue, attributable product revenue, royalties/revenue share, activation cost, contribution margin — methodology from FinOps, Finance owns official reporting), the operating relationship (joint planning, QBR cadence, commitment tracking, escalations) and the expansion case.
  • Monetization models. Pilot new pricing models per segment — per-transaction for creator tools, tiered for education platforms, flat for enterprises — and package the catalog into commercial bundles (genre, education, creator); scale what works.
  • Margin & reinvestment loop. Use revenue, royalty and margin data to reset priorities and improve the partner plan; feed rights gaps, demand signals, usage and partner insight back into acquisition, product and monetization strategy.
  • Repeatable operating model. Build the playbook, data model, AI workflows and management cadence — including the 30-day Rights Growth Pack (one-page growth plan, baseline P&L, product activation brief, rights-readiness view, prioritized backlog) for every new partner, a weekly activation review and a monthly partner business review.
