Engineer/Principal Engineer RF Microwave/Mixed Signal Design Engineer

Northrop Grumman•Baltimore, MD
•$87,600 - $163,200•Onsite

About The Position

Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is hiring an Engineer or Principal Engineer for its Airborne Multifunction Sensors Engineering and Sciences organization in Linthicum, Baltimore, Maryland. This is a full-time, onsite position with a 9/80 schedule, 10% travel, and relocation assistance that may be available. The role is contingent upon program award and requires the ability to obtain an Interim U.S. Government Secret clearance before starting. The engineer will design, model, verify, test, troubleshoot, and sustain RF and mixed-signal assemblies and subsystems used in electronic sensor systems, including radar and AESA products. Work spans requirements derivation and trading, RF budgets and frequency planning, assembly interfaces, material and packaging selection, RF chain analysis, electromagnetic simulation, data analysis, prototyping, and support throughout the product life cycle. The role involves collaboration with internal functions and external suppliers, and may use company manufacturing capabilities from foundry and microelectronic packaging through PCB fabrication, subsystem integration, and test. The requisition may be filled at Engineer (T02) or Principal Engineer (T03) level based on qualifications. Engineer candidates need a related bachelor's degree and two years of RF/microwave experience, or a related master's degree and no experience. Principal Engineer candidates need a related bachelor's degree and five years of RF/microwave experience, a related master's degree and three years of experience, or a related Ph.D. Both levels require demonstrated knowledge of electrical engineering design software and equipment, collaborative cross-functional experience, U.S. citizenship, and the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance, with an active Interim Secret clearance required before starting.

Requirements

  • Engineer (T02): Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related STEM field and 2 years of RF/microwave experience, or a master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related STEM field and 0 years of RF/microwave experience.
  • Principal Engineer (T03): Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related STEM field and 5 years of RF/microwave experience, or a master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related STEM field and 3 years of RF/microwave experience, or a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or related STEM field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electrical engineering design software and equipment.
  • Experience in a collaborative, cross-functional team environment.
  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Secret clearance; an active U.S. Government Interim Secret clearance is required prior to start.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate degree concentration in RF/Microwave Engineering or Computational Electromagnetics.
  • Direct experience with Receiver Exciter (REX) hardware designs, including receivers, waveform generators, master oscillators, reference generators, RF converters, and similar backend REX hardware.
  • Direct experience designing or testing AESA/phased-array, radar, SIGINT, or SATCOM products.
  • Experience working on DoD radar electronic designs through all product life-cycle phases, from concept through production support.
  • Experience with integrated-circuit packaging techniques, including chip-and-wire, QFN, flip-chip, and interposers.
  • Electronic troubleshooting from component to assembly levels.
  • Ability to write code for complex data reduction and analysis using Matlab or Python/C++/C#.
  • Technical team leadership experience.
  • Current, active U.S. Government Secret clearance or higher.

Responsibilities

  • Design, model, and verify RF and mixed-signal assemblies, including apertures, radomes, circulators/isolators, transmit/receive modules and switches, interposer assemblies, filters, RF manifolds/splitters, backplanes, and beamformers.
  • Design, model, and verify RF and mixed-signal subsystems, including AESA and other RF subsystem products used in electronic sensor systems such as radar.
  • Use industry design tools to model and simulate RF and mixed-signal performance.
  • Plan RF and mixed-signal hardware tests and create test specifications.
  • Support RF and mixed-signal hardware production, troubleshoot engineering issues, and perform sustainment engineering.
  • Prototype RF and mixed-signal hardware using standard RF laboratory test equipment.
  • Conduct antenna measurements using anechoic chambers and antenna-range test equipment.
  • Derive and trade requirements from antenna subsystem level down through component levels.
  • Manage RF budgets, frequency planning, and common assembly-level interfaces.
  • Predict assembly-level performance through materials, component, and packaging selection; RF chain analysis; electromagnetic simulation; and data collection, analysis, and modeling.
  • Collaborate with Mechanical, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and Test Design functions.
  • Use manufacturing capabilities and work with suppliers to support prototyping, production, fabrication, assembly, integration, and test.
  • Support products throughout the product life cycle.
