About The Position

The North Carolina Department of Revenue is currently recruiting for a Revenue Officer II/Large Case Unit Officer position. The primary purpose of this position is to bring resolution to high-dollar taxpayer collection cases by conducting investigative research, interpreting and enforcing North Carolina tax laws and actively collecting liabilities due to the state. The Large Case Unit Officer will engage in all activities involving the collection and resolution of delinquent taxes including, but not limited to, requesting special assessments, working with taxpayers to meet criteria for an installment agreement, submitting Offers in Compromise and performing financial adjustments as well as timely and accurately submitting cases for action by the Special Enforcement Unit. Cases assigned to the Large Case Unit Officer are considered some of the most complex in the TPAC Division's inventory. The position will ensure impeccable communication and decision-making skills as erroneous actions by the members of the unit could result in undue hardship on taxpayers and could result in legal action being initiated against the Department.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of revenue laws and the processes, procedures, and methodology required to administer each of the different tax types and schedules to determine tax liability, secure delinquent returns, conduct tax investigations, and assist taxpayers with filing delinquent returns.
  • Demonstrated experience with analyzing highly complex collection problems, determining proper application of the revenue laws, interpretations, and regulations, and evaluating alternative solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience acting in a professional manner during difficult, contentious, and/or stressful situations.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business/Public Administration, Economics, Accounting or related field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in accounting or collection work involving public contact; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Related fields considered are as follows: Psychology, Tax, Finance, Public Administration, Business Management, Tax Law, Business Law, Financial Management, Public Sector & Government Administration Management, Business Operations, Trust and Wealth Management, Political Science, Business Analytics, Banking and Finance, Interdisciplinary Studies, Public and Non-Profit Administration, and Criminology/Criminal Justice.
  • Federal and state criminal background checks that may include fingerprinting and verification of tax compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct investigative research to resolve high-dollar taxpayer collection cases.
