About The Position

Kentucky Public Pensions Authority (KPPA) is currently seeking a Retirement Systems Counselor I in the Division of Disability and Survivor Benefits. Located in Frankfort, Kentucky, KPPA is responsible for the investment of funds and administration of pension and health insurance benefits for nearly 444,000 state and local government employees, state police officers, and nonteaching staff of local school boards and regional universities. Daily system activities, including administrative support, investment management, benefits counseling, accounting and payroll functions, and legal services, are performed by a staff of professional employees working as the KPPA. KPPA covers three separate systems: Kentucky Employees Retirement Systems (KERS), County Employees Retirement System (CERS), and the State Police Retirement System (SPRS). In the KPPA Application and Review Branch provides a wide range of services to KERS, SPRS, and CERS members by phone and written correspondence. Employee training is provided on-site with an instructor in an interactive setting.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree.
  • Experience in public or business administration, accounting, wage and/or claims reporting, investigations or auditing will substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Administrative and/or clerical experience in Kentucky Public Pensions Authority will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Responsibilities

  • Counseling members by phone and in office on various disability retirement subjects such as disability retirement eligibility, application process, periodic medical and employment reviews, tax withholding, reemployment laws, direct deposit, and post retirement calculations.
  • Preparing and explaining retirement calculations to members and beneficiaries.
  • Communicating with members, agencies and other representatives by phone and in writing to ensure timely benefit eligibility determination and processing of benefits.
