The Retail Pharmacy Technician assists licensed pharmacists in technical duties related to the preparation and distribution of medications. This role involves accurately selecting, preparing, and labeling medications for patients, including hazardous drugs and controlled substances. The technician will also assist with medication distribution tasks, screen phone calls, and manage daily pharmacy procurement, inventory control, and outdate checking. Responsibilities may extend to performing nonsterile compounding, sterile IV admixture, and completing documentation for controlled substances. The role also includes obtaining and recording patient demographic information, data entry into the pharmacy system, insurance verification, label generation, and cashiering. Competence in third-party billing functions is required, and the technician must demonstrate age-appropriate patient care knowledge. In some cases, the technician may obtain immunization certification and administer immunizations under pharmacist supervision, or operate a vehicle to deliver medications and supplies.
