About The Position

Provide respite care for a nonverbal child with autism in the child’s home and in the community in Altoona, Wisconsin. The provider will incorporate the child’s interests into daily routines and support engagement, exploration, communication, and safety. The child uses an AAC device and may physically guide others to items of interest, so the provider should be patient and responsive to his nonverbal cues. Activities may include sensory play, hands-on learning, creative activities, and occasional outings such as visits to children’s museums or outdoor excursions.

The schedule is Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 3 PM to 6 PM. The position can provide 12–25 hours per week, with the potential to build hours through overnights. Pay is $17.66 per hour or $256 per overnight. Consumer Direct Care Network assists the Member or Managing Party with recruiting; if hired, the Member or Managing Party—not CDCN—will be the legal employer and have sole authority to hire or dismiss the worker.

Requirements

• Pass a caregiver/criminal background check.
• Be authorized to work in the U.S.
• Have reliable transportation.
• Be compassionate, patient, understanding, trustworthy, reliable, and consistent.
• Prior experience with nonverbal children or developmental differences is a plus, but is not required.

Responsibilities

• Ensure the child’s safety through active supervision.
• Prepare and assist with feeding.
• Engage the child in sensory, art, physical, and creative activities.
• Support communication using the child’s AAC device and nonverbal cues.
• Accompany the child on occasional outings and assist with activities and safety supervision as needed.
