About The Position

The Respiratory Therapist sets up, operates, and administers respiratory care equipment and procedures for diagnosing and treating respiratory disease in general floor and critical care areas. The therapist evaluates therapeutic objectives and outcomes, transcribes physician verbal orders, performs arterial punctures and blood gas analysis, and conducts co-oximetry, electrocardiograms, electrolyte testing, and basic pulmonary function testing. The role includes setting up, operating, and monitoring mechanical ventilators; making ordered changes; maintaining the patency, stability, and location of artificial airways; and ensuring appropriate humidification. The therapist must be familiar with different ventilators and ventilation modes and applications, and may help transport mechanically ventilated patients. The therapist provides routine respiratory treatments and oxygen administration for adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients. Treatments include aerosol therapy, nebulized medications, metered-dose inhalers, flutter and PEP therapy, incentive spirometry, suctioning, breathing exercises, CPAP/BiPAP, sputum induction, and oxygen analysis. The therapist explains therapies and procedures to patients and families, organizes and adjusts daily assignments to support efficient, high-quality care, and promptly documents treatment, test, monitor, and patient response information. Other duties include checking orders and patient identity, preparing prescribed medications, assessing patients, assisting physicians with bedside procedures, providing bag-mask ventilation and airway support, and attending assigned resuscitations and traumas. The therapist performs pulmonary function and oximetry testing; cleans, disinfects, sterilizes, and packages equipment; troubleshoots equipment; and arranges repair or preventive maintenance when needed.
