Requirements

  • Associate of Science Degree with certificate in Respiratory Care required.
  • 3-6 months of on-the-job experience to gain knowledge of policies, procedures and routines required.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) with the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) required within 12 months of accepting the Advanced Practitioner position.
  • Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP.NE or RCP.IA) license for work state required.
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
  • Current American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.
  • Current American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Cardiac Life Support (PALS) required.
  • Requires a high degree of ability and skill in written and verbal communication to accurately relay appropriate and high-quality recommendations to other members of the patient care team.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science Degree with a certificate in Respiratory Care preferred.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) preferred.
  • For MH Respiratory Therapy - PALS required within 6 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine and complex modalities of respiratory care independent of direct supervision, demonstrating competency on all therapeutic modalities performed and completing high-risk/low-volume skill checklists satisfactorily.
  • Documents procedures in the patient record according to departmental procedure, including patient assessment, interventions, and progress in the medical information system, and updates patient care plans and goals.
  • Develops/reviews/revises the plan of care as needed for optimum patient care outcome, interprets physician orders, evaluates patients in cooperation with the attending physician, and recommends appropriate care based on AARC clinical practice guidelines.
  • Regularly communicates with other patient care team members regarding patient condition and progress, communicates provider, nurse, and/or other caregiver updates on patient assessment & diagnostic testing results, and communicates unresolved issues to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintains continuity of services for optimum and timely patient care interventions, assumes charge responsibilities in the absence of a Lead therapist, and provides diagnostic procedures and ABG's for lab within the Respiratory Care Practitioner's scope of practice.
  • Works within Protocol Guidelines to ensure all patients receive appropriate therapy, with charts flagged for therapy changes for over 95% of all patients reviewed for protocol therapy.
  • Assists the department in achieving a Patient Satisfaction rate above 95% by being informative and helpful to patients and assisting with patient needs when possible.
  • Works toward improving interdepartmental relations and helps educate nursing and ancillary staff regarding Respiratory Care procedures.
